Here are some more from the summer of 2015. Enjoy.
1. A copper butterfly (Lycaena hyllus) on joe-pye weed. This native flower is common in our meadows, and it is a great attractor of butterflies and other pollinators. My plan for next summer is to start a butterfly garden that includes native plants, and this will be among them.
2. The Halloween pennant dragonfly (Celithemis eponina). During this time I was still accumulating photography equipment and felt I had to be a bit conservative, spreading out my expensive purchases. So most pictures taken at a distance like this dragonfly and the above butterfly were being taken through an ancient manual Canon Fd mount 70-210mm f/4 zoom lens that I bought off a guy for next to nothing on Craigslist. It was adapted to my Canon body with a lensed Fd/EF adapter. Using it was pretty challenging, but I did get some good things out of it. I like how the light plays on the veins of this dragonfly. It was pretty windy, and the insect was whipping back and forth across my field of view with me snapping away trying to get some in frame.
3. This large longhorn beetle is the oak borer (Elaphidion mucranotum).
4. The same beetle, now very angry because I am holding it. You can see in this picture and in the previous one that it has quite a few spines on its body. It was rather unpleasant to hold since it knew exactly how to use them.
5. A carrion beetle (Oiceoptoma noveboracense).
6. And finally, everyones' favorite big scary spider, the nursery web spider (Pisaurina mira). This spider comes in various color morphs, and this is one of them.
Nice! Love the details. I'm sure I'll sleep well tonight - with one eye open!
A good series of varied photographic subjects. Worth a look in the download. Well taken.
nice shots, thats the ugliest nursery web spider i have seen
An outstanding set Mark. I, of course, really like the Pennant as dragons are what I shoot 90% of the time. Fine work.
