A Sense of Place: Glen Affric.

Perhaps the difference between one glen and another doesn't jump out at you, but when I'm looking for photo-shoot ops I always find something of interest in whatever glen I've chosen to explore. As the day went on I found myself getting fonder of the Caledonian Pines (native to these parts and how most of Scotland was before we interfered).

These are lovely! I wouldn't have guessed I was looking Scotland though if you hadn't told me. Probably that stereotypical vision that gets locked into ones head. I think my favorite is the first, the way the trees frame the scene and the colors.
Thank you for sharing!

Thank you Linda. I've taken more and more to looking for natural framing to compose my shots with. Even simple framing lifts a shot to another level.

Beautiful photos of a country I like very much--my paternal ancestors lived in Scotland.

Thank you John. Much of the colonies (the USA amongst others) were made viable by Scots.

The framing in #1 is beautifully done. Pic appears a tiny bit dark, but it's a breathtaking scene.

The next to last one is my favorite for the contrasts between snow-covered mountaintop and autumn colors next to the water, as well as the cloud-covered peaks and near sunshine.

The wind-blown trees in #5 also makes a highly engaging image.

A very enjoyable series, R.G.!

Thank you Linda. Using natural features for framing deserves more of a mention IMO. I have a few more examples that I'll be posting when they're ready.

Thanks very much, Frank. One of the problems is I don't get out enough . That and living on the wrong coast .

These are all lovely and really work in terms of showing a "sense of place". The only one that misses in this regard is the third shot of the road. I feel this cold be just about anywhere. Again in this set you contrast the snow covered peaks and the, not yet quite winter, surroundings. That makes for really nice landscapes. I really enjoyed looking at these and am reluctant to pick a favorite.

Thank you Erich. I was lucky catching the tail end of autumn and the start of winter together. I didn't plan it that way and was expecting to get just the autumn colours. The snow started literally as I headed off for my break on the west coast. Most of these glens have footpaths for walkers or dirt tracks for the forestry commission and it seemed a good idea to include a shot of one. The trouble is most paths through forested areas are much the same. One thing I hoped came across was the bright golden late afternoon sun casting long shadows. It added to the atmosphere of that spot, but it's a bit optimistic expecting a small capture to convey the sense of space and lighting that went into making the scene what it was in reality. Thanks for commenting.

Great set RG. 1 & 4 are masterpieces. The natural framing in 1 transcends a vignette yet serves the same purpose. I tend to shy away from the 'double-trunk' frame, but it works well here. Your pp is as usual, spot on.
