Knowing You Need It, but Don't Have It

Arriving at the Isle of Dominica, we made an unplanned decision to take a side trip that included a stop at the Hibiscus Falls. It was right off the road, but the dense vegetation doesn't afford access unless you take the staircase down to the emerald colored pool at the base of the falls. The setting made it obvious I would be challenged without a tripod. It's still a great memory, but one you wish you could do over the next day.

I find this highly engaging and I'm not usually a fan of milky water, especially with a falls.

But your lush greenery, the added interest of fog or mist at the top, the straight yellow vines, the overall balance - how you positioned the falls in the frame + the white pool at the bottom...all add up to a beautiful, interesting image IMO.

I've been known to use a number of techniques in situations like this. Find something on which to rest the camera, use the self timer, and that works great. You did a great job of getting this one quite sharp, without a tripod, and a shutter speed of 1/3 seconds.

It is a very well done capture. A tad overbaked in the green department for my tastes but that's just me. Overall it's extremely well done which begs the question, If you could do it over, what would you change?

Thank you, Linda. You've made it tough to type while blushing from your generous comments. In full disclosure, I added the fog to minimize notice of the image being out of focus. A human ('bipod') can't do justice in the absence of a tripod.

Thanks for the kind words, Bob. All great suggestions when available. In the isolated case, just proves that sometimes it is better to be lucky than good.

Thanks, Mike. Appreciate the comments. I did compensate for the dimness of the scene as it was in real time. I will relook at the level of illumination. The 'redo' would be to be better prepared to insure I could get an accurate sharpness. Still in the 'Family Favorite' folder, just not the "Favorite' folder.

Nice photo. But I like water to look like water and not milk.

This is a beautiful shot, Charmdragon, though I don't care for "milky" water!
