i prefer reviews at shutterbug and popular photo magazines because they do a lab test as well as a field test. Rockwell's testing is just field use and he is quite opinionated. i check him out, but when he gets on his soapbox i tune him out. If you go to popphoto.com and click on buyers guide you can check out theit testing and reviews.
He admits he makes some of the stuff up (see his "about" page). I will read his reviews then balance them against others. He has some good information, but you have to to weed out the BS.

I agree, his information is just as valid as anyone else's. Take with a grain of salt, so to speak, and compare all the others, they are just opinions!!!

Just don't read one review, read as many as possible, check with the people here and then make your decision.
A lot of people are down on Ken Rockwell, but I've found him very helpful.

I find him informative as well, but with a little salt at times.
He is an easy read and explains things very well most of the time. I read other reviews as well, just to balance out.

I find him a great resource and am thankful for all the work he puts into it.
I have no interest in those who criticize him and don't have a similar free resource they have put out there for us. I don't have a problem with someone taking technical issue with anything he posts but the complainer needs to present facts and back up their info at least as well as he does to have any credibility in my book.
I also review other sources. dpreview and snapsort are two favorites.

Photozone's tests often don't match Ken's reviews at least for Nikon. There is your free resource haha
I believe the Nikon 24-120 3.5/5.6 is rated 3 stars (which as explained and viewed on photozone is pretty good). Ken has it in his top ten worst lenses ever, and gives the optics a 1.
I used to go to him a lot more than I do now. I'm concerned mainly with sharpness and image quality before anything. Ken loves the 'convenience' of lenses like the 18-200mm, and 28-300mm even though lab tests show these kinds of lenses do have significant flaws.

Stef, Rockwell actually mentions distortion in the wide angle end of the 28-300mm as I remember. I have that lens and find it to be an excellent first lens for covering a wide spectrum. I do have future plans for getting some of Nikon's premium lenses, but this was a good place to start. I couple that with the Tamron 10-24mm, but wish I had the Nikon 10-24mm. I also have the Nikkor 50mm f1.8 G and a 35-80mm which came with my 6006 which is a handy lens.
Who cares, it's just another opinion. Nothing wrong with that.
But the only way to see if something works for you is for you to
use it yourself.
I like reading Ken Rockwell, he's informative and he's got real working world insights.
But like everyone else, he's working from his own bias' and that's got to be taken into account.
I also like fredmiranda.com a LOT....LOTS of real world user reviews and they've never led me astray on a piece of gear.
No one mentioned DPreview which I balance against Rockwell.
