Feeling the spirit of '76 in 2016

With echoes of “Hamilton,” reader Denis Ian views Nov. 8, 2016:

“Two dozen decades ago, the British Empire bent a knee and grudgingly offered a sword of surrender to an army of Deplorables led by George Washington.

The embarrassment was so mighty, the commander of the defeated couldn’t bear to offer his own sword and delegated the display of humility to an underling, slighting the victor and bruising protocol.

The honors of war also called for a British band to play a song chosen by the victors. Legend has it that Washington requested “The World Turn’d Upside Down.”

Now the world is again turned upside down. And once more, the underdog outclassed the mighty and, with a legion of Deplorables, pointed to a new and brilliant future.

To bruise the words of Benjamin Franklin, who I am sure is in sweet shock, we have our republic back... IF we can keep it.

This time, we better pay more careful attention. We are ever lucky for this second chance.

The mess was caused by our own sloppy apathy. Our civic sloth, our moral negligence.

We let others hijack our principles, kidnap our values, and hostage our free speech. We permitted a slender few to tell us who we were to be, rather than honor who we are. We let them guilt us into a nightmare from which we have been freed.

We were mustered by a powerful personality, but in truth, we were the power. Ordinary us. We banged the shields. Banded together in a noisy brotherhood. Steeled our spines. And kept the faith.

We turned the world upside down. Again.

In this new beginning, we should stand tall for anthems that honor us all and kneel more often for the right reasons.

We should respect the Laws of Nature, and make fashionable common sense. Government must be reminded that we are its master.

We are America. Again.

The main stream media has been a discrace. Real journalism has died. The NY Times headline were blatantly anti Trump. They can say whatever they want in the editorial pages, but these opinions had NO PLACE on the front page. Real news reporting was replaced by active rooting. They should be embarrased. They owe the Columbia school of Journalism an apology.

I've said for years that there are very few real journalists, the rest are novelists. I was under the apparently false impression, that we were given the First Amendment to protect us from
government being too strong. What wasn't taken into consideration at the time was the fact that The Press could become corrupt and lose all sense of direction but for the Left. There are
very few newspapers, news magazines or electronic media that have tried to remain neutral and report EXACTLY what occurred and not swing to one side or the other politically. I have
not subscribed to a daily newspaper in over 30 years because I began to realize that I was not getting the news, I was getting a lot of one sided political spin. I can't blame all of the
reporters, because Editors have a very powerful, heavy-handed pen that with a few additions and subtractions to a formerly factual piece, can spin it any way they want. And, you are
so right, the MSM is a disgrace to factual journalism.

Thank you for expressing so well what many of us have in our hearts about what has happened since President Elect Trump accomplished, what the Left felt was the unthinkable, and got elected against all odds. Many of us were extremely unhappy about Obama being elected the first time and totally disgusted that he was elected again, but there were NO demonstrations or riots by the Right over Obama's election. It seems that the Right is not the warmongering, violent political faction that the Left has accused us of being. I don't recall whether it was Marx or Lenin who said, "Accuse your enemies of what you do." or something to that effect, and that is exactly what the Left has done for years. Accusing us of being Fascists, Communists, Racists, etc., has been their favorite mantras to frighten their constituents, or to drum up new voters to their fold. Great Post!

Wonderful post. I would add that the corrupt press is still corrupt. Let us not let down our guard because we have won this battle, the war still rages as can be seen by the senseless protesters. (Most of whom are apx 3-4 years out of puberty - what kind of life experience could they possibly have?). Keep thinking clearly. Now, on to photography!

Oh PULEEZ! The media gave Trump a HUGE pass almost every day! It started when talk shows which NEVER let politicians call in their interviews allows Trump to do so. Then when he told lie after lie after lie, even claiming that he did not say or do things that we ALL saw him say or do, the media generally gave him a pass on that. The media's JOB is to challenge those in power or those who would be in power. I think they failed us big time with Trump. Of course, Hillary was busy burning her own bridges in front of her....

What you need is a monarch like we have in UK. The queen takes no part in politics and has little political power. She is the head of state. But, if things go really wrong she can say to the head politico, the Prime Minister in our case, "You're FIRED". Parliament gets dissolved and an election is held. A useful thing to have. Still, you've made your choice between The Lady and the Trump. Give him a chance, he may turn out to be a good President.

I must admit, Trump did get a lot of free press, but it was all bad coverage by a liberal media who tried their best to crush him! The voters did not believe their lies and America won!

Great words from the OP. But I cannot stress how important it is to drain the ses pool from Washington, to state capitals, to county seats, to town halls. It's not a swamp but a ses pool! The dishonest media has be brought to their knees and out of business. Free speech is one thing, but lying sleaze bags trying to manipulate the country into destruction is another. This is Trumps biggest challenge and if not done, we will back in the crap in a few years. Trump has so much to do; I feel sorry for him. The Clinton, obozo, soros machine has to be reprimanded for their crimes and taken down. If any of this is not done, all we did was stall the inevitable for the terms of Trumps years in office; if they don't snuff him first.

Once again a blind man. Everything you said was totally wrong. The media hammered Trump every chance they got. They also exaggerated or made up things about him. At the same time they buried any and all negative info about Hillary and made excuses for her. They were in effect her propaganda machine. How do we know this. After the election they admitted it, and made a half hearted promise to try to be less biased. However, in reality what they were saying was, "we will try to root out weak, corrupt candidates from the left, to help ones with less obvious problems, then we will be biased for them". Their upset that they helped a weak, corrupt Hillary, over a weak socialist like Bernie Sanders. You see, a leopard can not change it's strips. A totally corrupt media can not buy their soul back once they've sold it to the devil.

So, sb, if you want to continue to delude yourself, go right ahead. The truth has always been an elusive thing for the left.
