Mars is one tough destination.
That would be an Oops! with a capital O. There have been so many successful Mars landings that people forget how incredibly difficult to achieve a soft landing on it. I think I once read that about 50% of the attempted landings on Mars have failed. Maybe that number has gone down a bit over that last few years as we have gotten better at it, but it is still not an easy thing to do.

Physics is complicated. You have a thin atmosphere, on the one hand, but weaker gravity, on the other. The terminal velocity for earth is about 125 mph.
