The "Bison Roundup" happens each year in early October. I grew up near the National Bison Range so I incorporate a visit and a chance to photograph the event whenever I can. They maintain the bison heard at about 350 and conduct the roundup to bring in the bison and check them for health and to sort the herd as needed. This year they Auctioned about 25 head and sent another 25 to a park near Denver, Colorado.

This old boy decided not to play, when that happens, they just leave them out on the range
Years ago they used horsed to bring them in but recently have started using four wheel drives and 4 wheelers
After coming out of the corral, they just want to get away from humans
And find Momma!
They gather them on the back side of the ridge and bring them over when they are ready for them
If not watched they tend to head back where they came from
Another of the bulls that chose not to play
On the road again
Just can't wait to get on the road again
These bulls weigh about a ton and can move about 40 MPH
This is a very interesting series of photographs chronicling a momentous annual event.
I have enjoyed viewing these photographs along with your descriptions of what was
happening.
Thank you for posting.
Fascinating storytelling with photos, Dave. "On the road again" is an awesome stand-alone shot. How fantastic to be in the right spot for that one!

We are lucky to still have some of these magnificent beasts roaming around. Thanks for sharing this nice
series with us.
very nice set Dave....love the single bison on the road....he has apparently claimed it all for himself...thanks for sharing!!
And if they decide to charge, the results are about the same as if a rhino charged you; they are about the same size.
I love all of them, but that first one really shows the muscles.
Nice set of images. Thanks for posting about this most interesting event. These brutes are so ugly and so beautiful.
Bison are hard to photograph. You cannot rely on your camera settings. If you do the faces are underexposed. These shoots are great. Good face detail. Nice job
Fantastic set! Loved them. Cheers.
Wonderful shots! Great story. Thanks for posting.
Great shots. The shots of the bison on the road are terrific.
Wonderful pictures of magnificent animals. I visited the bison range in 1974. What a unique place. I also loved the pronghorn antelopes I saw there.
I couldn't agree more. Buffalo are difficult to capture. But you have done an excellent job at capturing these magnificent animals. Thanks for sharing.
