Non tech review of a Leica IIIb.

I found this camera at a yard sale about 2 years ago. With the camera was a Ernst Leitz Watziar Summar 50mm 1:2 lens and also Canon 135mm 1:3.5 lens, Canon lens came in a leather case. Own manual. Book title" Leica Guide " by W.D. Emanuel. Metal film cutting guide. Without the film cutting guide you will have problems putting the film in the camera. You load film in a Leica from the bottom of the camera body not by opening the back of the camera. To understand how this is done go on the internet look for copy of manual or how to load Leica's cameras. This is only for The Leica lllb: distance scale is in meters. The f stops are 12.5 - 9 -6.3-4.5- 3.2- 2.2- 2. Odd f stops? No light meter, I use the 16 rules of light (outside only, did not try indoor) Can use 100/200/400/ 800 speed film. Note: I would not use 800 speed film because the setting would be 1000 and that is top end speed, you could damage a old camera ( My Leica was made in 1938) having setting at 1000. You can go the other way down to Bulb which marked "T" on my camera. To have a Leica in one hands and you would under stand why people back in the 1930s were going nuts to get their hands on one. Have a twin eyepiece, one view finder other rangefinder. Using the camera, one word Great! When using 50mm lens use camera rangefinder. Using the Canon 135mm lens, the barrel of lens will cut off part of view of the rangefinder. So what I use Walz rangefinder which you would put in the shoe on top of the camera. One problem Walz rangefinder is in feet, not meters. So I only use the 135mm lens and rangefinder for long ranger pictures. If you like my non-tech review of Leica. I can do other review of old cameras I have and use. Quinn-4

I can vouch for the need to precisely trim the film for loading in my Leica 111c. it also loads through the base of the camera. I run through the actions of the 111c to keep things running smoothly. A trimmed 'Dummy' film has been through the camera many times over the years, when I have not actually shot pictures. The most recent use of the Leica has been with Kodak HS IR film. Being a rangefinder model, the dense IR filter remains in place, and using the 35mm focal length lens set at the Hyper-Focal distance, focus is OK from 4ft. to infinity. Shutter 1/100 sec, and f/16 aperture. Just right for sunny conditions, and sunny conditions are needed for IR. I would like to get more use out of the six Leica lenses with my (Nikon DSLR) bodies, but the adapter only allows close-up focus. I bought the 111c in 1959. the previous owner who died, had the body synchronised for flash. Lovely camera to handle, despite the slowness compared to a 7fps motor-driven DSLR.. Many thanks Oskar Barnack.... Your memory lives on.

Hi both Pablo 8 & Screamin Scott. Why not just use the Leica camera body and lenses you have.? I known about taking lens from 9X12 camera and hooking them up with digital cameras, which I thing is a great idea, Something I thing about doing. I made a mistake: Canon 135mm lens has both Ft. & meters on it. So using Walz rangefinder with Canon lens would be no problem. Problem come in when using Walz with 50mm Watziar lens. Walz is in feet, the lens is in meter. Hi Leicaflex. Here is a list of some old camera non battery I have that work and tested: Voigtlander Bessa II//Voigtlander Bessa(1930s)// Voigtlander Perkeoi I//Hasselblar 1000f//Mamiya C330//Rolleicord III//Yashica D & Mat//Minolta "Semi-First" (1938). Retina I - IIc - IIIc - IIIC - Relex IV// Zeiss Ikon Contaflex ( old style)//Zeiss Ikon Contessa . I see that I am running out of room. Until next time Quinn 4

My IIIc suffers from slow shutter speeds on the slow end of the dial...repair is too costly since I am on a fixed income... (note the correction of the model from IIc to IIIc serial # dates back to 1950, came equipped with a 5cm F 3.5 Elmar lens)

Ok, I did not known your Leica camera body was not working right. Taking the lens from the camera not working and put them on another camera that is working makes sense. Forget about repair cost, I have had cameras that I found need repair, Not known the cost to fix them at the time, but when I did, the cameras out the door into the trash can and take the lose. With old cameras it is: make do, do over, do without. I have a camera you made be able to help me out. It a Reflex-Korelle Model II. When I get it, it work ( all the parts work). Put film in it and a cable inside the camera body broke, making camera dead in the water. The lens come off, it Carl Zeiss Jena Tessar 1: 2.8 80mm. It a hell of question to ask. What am I looking at to put that lens on a digital Camera? Quinn 4

Many of the mirrorless cameras have very short registration distances thus are able to easily adapt older lenses to them without losing infinity focus. The main issue is finding a mechanical adapter to fit the lens to a mirrorless camera. I have older manual focus Canon, Konica, Minolta, Pentax (screw & bayonet mount), Nikon et al lenses that I picked up cheap mechanical adapters for so they still get used.

To Goofynewfie: I not set up to put up pictures from digital camera or film camera. I have no idea what to do and when I ask people, the answer I get, I have to have PH.D. from MIT to understand them.
T0 Screamin Scott: What is a mirrorless cameras? Cost of one for every day use? Like I say I don't into world of digital camera, so I totally lose when it come to them. Quinn 4

No worries.
It does take a bit to attach photos.
Cheers!

A "mirrorless camea" is one that has no mirror to divert some of the incoming light to the viewfinder. Thus there is no mirrorbox to add bulk nor any moving mirror to add vibration. I use 2 different Olympus mirrorless cameras. One is a Olympus Pen EP-3 (rangefinder styling & the other is a OMD E-M10 (smaller DSLR style. The rangefinder projects the image onto the rear LCD & the DSLR style sends it to the electronic viewfinder. Either model can send the image to the other option but the rangefinder style requires a separate item to do so. I paid about $300 for the body only for each camera.

To Goofynewfie: Thank you for the pictures, The picture with two Leica back to back, one on the left side is what I have. Ser.#: 28x,xxx.
To Screamin Scott: Thank you for getting back so fast. You answer one big question for me: Cost. $300.00, for just camera body. That put an end to that idea.
Good night, Quinn 4

I can, and do, use the Leica 111c and the Leitz lenses, but if I could use the Leitz lenses on my Nikon DSLR bodies, I would have TTL focussing and digital economy.
