Number 1 is the Rex T. Barber Memorial Bridge... recently built, and named so on the 60 year memorial of the event in WWII where Rex T. Barber shot down a Japanese "Betty" Bomber carrying General Osoruku Yamamoto. Yamamoto was the mastermind of the bombing of Pearl Harbor in 1941, and the Battle of Midway, among others.

Barber was flying a P-38 lightning and a dogfight ensued with three "Betty's", Japanese Zero's, and a flight of P-38. There was controversy over the kill. Barber was awarded the "kill" in one review, while in another, he and another pilot each were awarded half a kill. I seem to recall that finally Barber was awarded the full kill.

The P38 lightnings were used because the 1,000 mile flight interception of Yamamoto was beyond the fuel range of other aircraft in the Pacific Theatre at the time. 600 miles to intercept and 400 miles home, plus combat fuel. 18 P38's made the mission.

Yamamoto's body was recovered in his downed "Betty" in the jungle the day after the mission.

Barber came home a hero, and started his own insurance business in Redmond Oregon. He eventually ended up in city politics, as mayor and judge.

Looks like you were standing on the old hwy bridge when you shot image #1 the Barber bridge, and #2 the railroad trestle. Both of those were the only passage across the gorge from Central Oregon to Madras.

The #1 image, the newer bridge was initiated from each side of the gorge rim, reaching out slowly toward where the two sides eventually met in the middle. Living here made watching the progress of construction to the center was very interesting. They did not, however, drive a "golden spike" in the center upon completion.

Thanks all, for looking and commenting. This was my first time posting on the new procedure, so I missed the download on the first shot.
