I currently have a Nikon D3100 and would like to upgrade. I am looking at the Nikon 7200. Suggestions, comments please. Thanks!

Go for it! You'll love it. You can sell the D3100 for a decent price. Here's what they've sold for on ebay.

Good choice for an upgrade from a 3100. I went from a d5000 to a 7200 and glad I did. The 5000 is a good camera and I transmuted it to an Infrared camera so it's still getting some use. The only other way I would have gone was to go to a full frame system but most of my glass is DX so I stuck with that format. One day I would like to move up but I have no complaints with the 7200. Great camera.

After you do your homework, you cannot buy a 7200 until you can articulate what the 7200 will do for your photography that the 3100 is not now doing.
Be prepared: Many hoggers will demand this of you.

Why are you relying on someone else's opinion? Check some professional technical and user reviews. Talk with some local photographers, etc. Kepp an open mind so you consider more than one mass market brand.

What I've read about the D7200 almost made me buy one. A multitude of autofocus points, the awesome low light performance, larger buffer, and ALL those pixels! The only thing that held me back is the D750. Since you have a D3100, I would expect you also have DX lenses. If that's the case, and if you've got a lot invested in that glass, you may want to stick to a DX camera. OK, back to the D750 - I only have full frame glass, holdovers from the film days. So, in essence, my full frame lenses are overkill for my (DX) D200. A lot of glass not being utilized on that crop sensor. Sooo, a D750 is going to be living with me soon. As for the D7200, I don't think you will regret buying one, it's really one of the best crop sensor cameras out there. I'm helping a high schooler learn some basics in photography. Helped her pick up a D5100 with an 18-55 lens on Ebay. It's a good camera and she won't outgrow it any time soon, as her skills improve. As for doing your own research, my feelings are that you are doing exactly that. In fact, that's one of the big reasons this site is so popular. JerryC41 is always good about giving some reference material. Another site to check out:

Just one of the advantages of the D7xxx and above cameras is the pentaprism viewfinder. The D3xxx and D5xxx series Nikons have a pentamirror viewfinder. The glass prism inside the D7200 gives a larger, slightly brighter view through the viewfinder. That helps with composition. The U1 and U2 memory settings on the mode dial are great. You get the virtual horizon also. The body is weather sealed.

Do your own research you lazy bum. The differences between those cameras are stark. Tons of info on the Net just waiting for you to digest.

Why not simply move on once you've read it instead of being insulting?

The D7xxxs weigh and cost about twice the D5xxxs. The D5500 takes the same images as a D7200 and adds a very useful articulated screen.

The D7xxxs do have advantages and look cooler. Many love them. I like the better viewfinder and two cards. But I don't like the unlighted button / unreadable green screen control approach.

These rude son of a gun's are like weeds. Once we get rid of one, another one pops up.

As far as the two cameras go, I would suggest going to NikonUSA.com and pulling up the technical specification on each camera. These specs will show the O.P. exactly where the two cameras may be alike and where they may differ. If, as it has been said, that these two cameras are very much alike, the O.P. may want to consider the D500. Although more expensive, the AF on the D500 and Expeed 5 processor are worth the difference in price. I would love to shoot sports with this camera.

The D500 specs are outstanding, but the price could be a turn off. Since the OP is just now looking to upgrade from a D3100, he may not want to make such a huge jump. Also keep in mind that the D500 has no popup flash. Probably an important point for some people.

I do think not putting a popup flash on it was a mistake. It works as fill quite nicely.
