Lenses

I'm looking to buy a new lens..something that I don't have to keep switching lenses. I have the kit lenses that came with my Rebel EOS T1i (18-55mm & 50-250mm). I also have a 50mm 1.8 and a Tamron 70-300mm.
I'd like an all round lens to take on vacation or for example...I was at my 5-year-old's PreK graduation. I had to swap out my 18-55 for 50-250 and it got to be a nuisance.
I'm looking at either.... the Canon 18-135mm or maybe Tamron AF 18-200mm or Sigma 28-300. I haven't really heard anything about the Sigma lens so I wouldn't even know if that should be in the running.

I have a Sigma 18-250mm on my Canon T2i and it works nicely. Very satisfied. Have has several Sigma lenses over time and they have all performed well.

I also have the 18-250 Sigma on my T3i. Love the quality, give me great "reach" both near and far so I don't have to keep switching out lenses and it's not to heavy. Great lens, I have not been dissapointed and glad I spent the money on it.

Rather than investing in a new lens, I recommend a new compact camera with a fixed lens that you can carry with you almost everywhere.

I also recommend the Tamron 18-270 - very small and compact and can be bought with IS. My Sony version, does not need the IS 'cause it's in the body.

Fuji "bridge" camera for about $200 or Canon SX40 for about $400 will give you a range from about 28mm to 800mm (35mm equiv) and all in a "fixed" lens that you don't have to change. Canon does nice job in low light too!

I have this lens for my Sony and use it as my do everything lens for 95% of my shooting. I also have the Sigma 10-20 wide angle and I am satisfied with it. Sigma is producing some good quality lenses.

I have had experience with both the Sigma 18-250 as well as the Tamron 18-270. Both are excellent but the Tamron is smoother rotating through the zoom range. Both show good corner to corner sharpness at f/8 which is where I do most of my shooting. You'll be happy with either! My best, J. Goffe

I just attended an all day seminar and shoot Sunday in my area. Tamron was there with various lenses to check out and use on our cameras. I checked out the 18-270 and the 70-300. I liked the 18-270 the best. It zoomed smoothly as the 70-300 didn't do as well in that area. Photos from both were good, but the 70-300 was a little bulky. Thinking seriously of purchasing the 18-270 as the rebate on this one is $100.00

I'm a Nikon user, but I'd recommend going with the 18-270mm lens. You'll find that you'll have need of the wide angle in the area of 20-24mm quite often.

It appears you're looking for a jack of all trades, master of none IN the $600 - $700 range. The topic has been covered here before - BUT - - here are a couple of web sites that will help you decide on features versus price. Although more expensive and not quite as long, I chose the Canon 18-200 for my 7D. With your crop sensor T1i, I don't think you'll be happy with a 28mm for the wide end! Even with an 18mm - I often need my Tokina 12-24 in situations where the 18 just can't get it all.
