I don't have much experience in studio portrait lighting but I've read a lot on the subject and watched some long videos. I was ready to try it out. I bought a 3 mono light system with reflector umbrellas recently and was going to practice by taking pictures of my little cousin. The problem is I get so nervous. I took this picture using one monolight with silver reflector umbrella and could not figure out why I had the weird shadows.

AFTER the photo shoot I'm still thinking about what went wrong and my 11 year old says. Mom, isn't the reflector umbrella backwards? Yeah, ... I had the reflector turned around and was next to the subject.

Anyone else ever do anything stupid that would make me feel better about now?

Come on, I'm feeling so dumb, make my day. Here, I'll tell another one. I had just been taking photography classes for a couple weeks and this really nice older lady mentioned she wanted a barn door. I thought, oh that's nice she must want a western shot. So I was at an auction and found the cutest old barn gate, bought it, took it home, washed it up and brought it to our next class. The instructor laughed his @$$ off. 40 weeks of class and they still reminded me of that little episode at the last class!

Ohhhh I would love a barn door, if you purchased one for me I would have given you a big hug... the real thing not the lighting barn door.

Let's see... Here's one for you.... I took my camera to the camera shop because I couldn't get the auto focus to work... the lens wasn't on correctly.

Looks like a Larson Reflectasol.
For that type of umbrella, yes, you'd want to bounce off of it.
There are other types that you can shoot through.
That's the way I prefer to use them.
You can get the light closer, which translates to softer.

I shot my sister's wedding with the flash sync set to bulb (M) instead of X for electronic flash.
It was firing before the shutter opened.
The only photos that came out were shot with the wide angle lens, which was properly set.
(Mamiya C300 medium format film camera.)
They're still married.

No, I won't laugh at you, I'll laugh with you.
You learn from your mistakes. Some of them are because of a lack of knowledge and some are just plain stupid.
You've learned, you can laugh!

In high school I shot a night time football game for the yearbook. Unfortunately the flash was only good for about 30' or so. Even pushing the ASA (ISO) 400 film to 800 there was not enough light, for the majority of the game.

Many times I'd think I had a 36-exposure roll in the camera when it was 20- or 24-exposures. I didn't shoot that much (except for yearbook assignments), so a roll might last me a week. This was before auto advance was built in, so more than once I'd advance the lever too quick and rip the film out of the canister. I think it took me three times to learn to put the end flap from the box on the back of the camera so I knew what I was shooting.

I shot high-school football for a newspaper.
One particular game I noticed the flash was recycling really fast.
Got back to the lab and had two exposures.
Turns out I didn't have my sync cord... at all!
The two images I got were published- both were touchdowns with really cool lighting. I was lucky I shot at the same time as another photographer.

Back in the early 80's I was on vacation on Block Island for a week. Took my Miranda Sensorex with several rolls of hand rollEd film. Lots of shots available. I met the crew and models for a Ralph Lauren photo shoot on the boat over. They invited me to the shoot. Gave me permission to shoot away. With lots of shots available I was snapping shots like crazy. Back at the Inn. Went to change the film..... What film? Duh!!

Not my goof, but still funny...

Years ago, late 70s the fam and I are at Disney World. My mom has a Canon AE-1 and the night time parade of lights is going by. She is shooting like a fiend. Must have taken a 100 shots. Get back to the hotel...... No film in the camera! We still all laugh about that, and I always check to make sure my memory card is in before every shoot.
