The peacock fly (Callopistromyia annulipes) is a small fly, slightly larger than a fruit fly. It belongs to a large family of odd-behaving flies that seem unable to walk without waving their wings. This little guy (I thought it was a male) was on a dead log, and it kept backing away from me as I tried to move in to get a shot. So I had to basically lunge at it while taking a burst of pictures, and I simply got lucky. But I think the picture came out a little soft.
That sounds like a good find. I haven't heard of that one before.
What a fantastic shot. The things you see in the macro world are amazing.
A great shot !!! Thank you for the info. Shang
These flies are pretty common thru much of the US, but where I see them most often is in forested areas, on dead wood. I don't know their life story, but perhaps this is where they mate and lay eggs.
