Re-drawing the map; it has been going on forever!
Dave
For those able to view stereo image pairs , here's a view a bit closer to how the scene actually appears.
I have never thought about territorial disputes on this level - cool capture, Dave!

Even within this shot it may have been going on for quite some time. Apparently lichen can be centuries old. So if it's an aggressive dispute it would be hard for us to tell
.
Was it really that blue or have you added a WB shift?

That rich blue-gray was one major reason I was impressed with this micro-scene before capturing its reflected photons! I desaturated a touch to make it more believable.
Thanks, Coz, for still being impressed with the blue.
This image was from several years ago. I hope to get back to that rock (and several others) next spring or summer to document the border shifts.
As an aside...lichens are a commensal combination of a particular alga with a particular fungus...but such a constant association that they are casually considered a consistently characterizable "species" ...but are, truth-to-tell, just a long-term, multigenerational "close friendship" of two devotedly cooperative organisms.
I'm thinking there are some lessons there that may be informative to....other organisms...????
Ain't nature grand?

I don't remember Robert Ardrey discussing lichens, but I guess if you can train worms, lichens can be territorial. Interesting image, and the stereo works.

Don,
Does my heart good to hear mention of Robert Ardrey. His name and thoughts have been long too sparse and cost and in and from current thought and conversation!
And thanks for your comment on the stereo pair. I liked this one too; I think it provides a greater appreciation for the lichens' environs.
