Walking To The Sun

I posted this image some time ago in the POST PROCESSING forum but as with my other postings, I've always thought it went beyond that forum. So here for your comments (and pixel-peeping) is another of my images. BTW, I've played with the exposure and this is what I like.

Howard, you have very good taste. This is an outstanding shot, even more so when downloaded! I thought about it in relation to a composition discussion in another thread and it works beautifully. The bear is a strong element and balances the brighter sun. Awesome!

Thank you for your comment. I'd like to be clear here ... this is not a photograph. It is a composite
of two photographs - the bear, and the sunset. I placed the bear into the sunset photo to create
the image that you see. This is why I always felt that my work went beyond simple Post Processing
and why I was happy to find this forum.

Great composite, the only thing I would say is that the bear needs to look as though it is on the snow father than floating. I would have made a duplicate of the background above the bear and with a mask masked out the bear but made it look as though its two feet were in the snow and the other two with a very slight shadow under them and made some footprints behind it.

Interesting point. I have had some long conversations about the bear's feet AND leaving footprints. The last time I worked on this image was to place footprints at the rear feet; I guess I should have done better. Since you brought it up, I think I may take another crack at it. BTW, feel free to work on it if you want to but I would appreciate if you only worked on the feet - leave the rest of the image as is (leave the bear where he is, don't change the exposure, etc.). Thank you for your very pertinent comments, I really appreciate hearing from people who can see ways to improve weaknesses in the image.

Very nice Howard. A good capture of a subject that is both dangerous and beautiful.

Hi Howard, I worked on your picture, what I did was to make a selection of the bear and make it into a new layer, I then made a new layer and drew a line from the sun to the bear to try to see where the sun would hit it. I made one more new layer and placed it between your picture and the selected bear layer. Using the brush too with a feathered edge I painted the shadow in black as to how I thought it would look by looking at the ridges of snow and how they were. I erased bits I did not need and then took the opacity down to the same or as near as the shadows made by the sun...Did a bit more refining as needed... As you asked I only worked on the bear and did not change anything other than selection and duplicating it to a new layer..

I like your work; thanks for showing me where some improvement was needed. The only thing I would adjust is the opacity of the shadow; Looking around at the rest of the image, I think the shadow of the left front leg is too dark.

You are welcome, The shadow was done as one for the whole of the bear, maybe a bit lighter would have been better..
