I was getting frustrated with my very slow broadband so I arranged for my ISP (Virgin) to supply a new modem.
It arrived yesterday so I installed it and also replaced the original cable with a new one, I then had to initialise the new modem by making a free automated phone call to Virgin which took a few seconds. They also reduced my monthly payment by £18 for two the next two years to recompense for the months of slow broadband speed.
Attached are two screenshots showing speedtest "before" and "after" installing the new modem.
Thanks very much Virgin !

I agree but that does not matter that much to me, unfortunately the cable into the house is still the original one, about thirty years old.
Obviously I cannot change that, Virgin are pushing their fibre cable lately, at a cost of course. I was speaking to a Virgin engineer recently and he said fibre would be of no benefit to me.
They still use the original cable into the house an only use fibre cable as far as the box at the end of the road because fibre cannot go round sharp bends and has to be kept straight as possible.
That's a substantial improvement. Fiber optic is not available in my area. Verizon didn't think they would recover the substantial cost of installing it. Just as well.
Good jump up, I had the same situation no to long ago here. With Google opting out of fiber due to high upfront costs I think the next push will be to 5G or higher, no cable at all.

We have a problem with ours too, living in a small village our telephone exchange is 9 miles away, they say not enough people there to make it feasible to upgrade the lines!! So we have snail pace internet to put up with.
Got FIOS here, second house on the block when it was installed, let us get rid of the extra phone line, not so fond memories of dial up and DSL, have TWC at little summer house , not bad either,
That upload speed is fairly wide spread, governed by the ISP.
Charter Communications advertises a download speed of 60mbs with their cable internet. So when I signed up with them I expected the 60 they were claiming in their ads. And their installation technician when I asked "so I will get up to 60mbps" said "you will get at least that, minimum, but probably higher". Needless to say I was a little perplexed when I checked my speed it was only about 30mbps. I called their tech support and visited their local office to see what the problem was. They both said 30mbps is all I will get in this area because technologically Charter isn't that advanced. But I am still paying for 60mbps, no discount for only half the speed. I had their TV service when their introductory price was $29.99/month. I dropped it when the price almost tripled in less than a year.
People are being scammed everyone when it comes to the delivery of your internet speed vs what they claim they are giving you. And most strt out quick and them slowly dwindle down to almost nothing. Also, when you run these tests with these speed tests, the speed they tell you are getting is not the average over the time it's checked but the fastest or close to the fastest you got for the time checked.

26 Mbps is too slow? I can only get 18 and it's fine.
Oh wait, those are probably metric Mbps over there, and like putting litres of petrol in your car instead of gallons, right? You and your farthings and quid and measuring weight with stones. I'll never get it.
