Older non-AI Lenses and the Nikon D7200

Hi there, I am considering an upgrade to the Nikon D7200 body. I like everything I see but Have a few questions. I now use several 50 yr old Nikon lenses from my F series camera on my d 5200 body. The results are great except for the lack of metering. I can meter with a hand held meter and get by or just shoot from the hip so to speak and get some absolutely perfect shots. these lenses are wonderful. My questions are, is anyone using these older non-AI lenses on a d7200? I was told that the meter will work through the lens on this model for spot or center weighted metering after you tell the camera what lens your using. Is this true and how are theresults. also i was told that you cant put these lenses on the D7200 body which doesnt make sense since it is a f mount bayonet style mount. Check with Nikon to verify this, I may not be exactly correct. But I think, they will work perfectly fine on the D7200, but you will have to have them modified, then the metering will work in aperture mode. Also, if not modified they can damage the camera. A benefit of a D7200 over a 5000 series camera is that you can use the older AF lenses too and there are some real gems in that series.

According to the official Nikon website, pre-AI lenses will not work on EITHER 5200 or 7200.
Further research on Ken Rockwell site claims that Nikon no longer offers conversion of pre-AI lenses to fit newer camera bodies, but conversion parts might still be found and installed by a 3rd party of your choosing.
Are you sure your lenses in question are pre (i.e. non) AI?

Yes I have had then since the late 60's. they are full manual lenses. they do fit my D5200 just fine. You just have to shoot in full manual mode. this doesnt bother me at all. that all I've shot for most of my life.

They wont work and can damage the AI coupling which provides metering function for AI lenses made since 1977

They can be modified and many have been done so. I own several myself. Check with independent repair shops and/or stores to see who can get it done for you.

The non ai lenses will mount on nikon entry level cameras like the 3000 and 5000 series and some older models like the D60 and D40 as well. But if you try to mount them on your D7000 series camera they will be too tight to click in the mount. You would have to AI them yourself with a dremel tool to remove a bit of the mounting ring, or get them AI'd by someone else. I had to AI my nikkor 50mm f1.4 before it would mount on my D7000.

Under compatible lenses the D7200 is not compatible to pre AI lenses and the D5200 isn't either. The OP did use them on the D5200 without problem.

I had several really nice AIS lenses, but, I got so used to auto focus for what I do now I sold them ALL because they slowed me down. For landscape they would be fine but I find that my AF 16-35 f4 Nikon is just as sharp as those older primes so it was GOODBYE OLD, hello new.

As having been a moderator of a website devoted to using older non metering lenses on Nikon DSLR's, I can tell you the older Pre-Ai (or Non-AI as some call them) would work with no issues on a D5200 since that camera has no aperture follower tab. The D7200, however, has one and those older lenses should not be used unless the lens has been modified. The issue is that the older Nikkor Pre-Ai lenses have an aperture "skirt" which extends down past the mount face, newer lenses don't & that is what causes the damage to the cameras with the aperture follower tab. There are people who will modify a Pre-AI Nikkor lens for a fee. There are very few factory mod kits available & those that are, are for less popular lenses. You won't find any for popular focal length lenses. Some people take a dremel tool & do the mod themselves. I don't recommend that. Personally, I'd keep the old mount as they would retain value as opposed to being butchered.
