I was not being argumentative, and no, I do not have any technical evidence either way. My guess is that if some images are deleted and others are left intact, the resulting "holes" left by the deleted images, could contribute to fragmentation issues, so that might be the thinking you have seen mentioned?
As I said, I have no definitive technical knowledge on the issue, but my thinking is that total deletion would be equivalent to the formatting performed my most DSLRs (as opposed to the low level formatting option on Canon Cameras).
