I was not being argumentative, and no, I do not have any technical evidence either way. My guess is that if some images are deleted and others are left intact, the resulting "holes" left by the deleted images, could contribute to fragmentation issues, so that might be the thinking you have seen mentioned?
As I said, I have no definitive technical knowledge on the issue, but my thinking is that total deletion would be equivalent to the formatting performed my most DSLRs (as opposed to the low level formatting option on Canon Cameras).

To the HOGS who have offered very valuable and comforting suggestions to help me recover my lost images due to my idiotic mistake of formatting the memory card before ensuring that ALL images were securely transferred I offer my sincere gratitude. I certainly learned a lot from all of you and I won't make the same mistake again. I received JPL's suggestion to try Piriform's Recuva free software and it worked like a charm !!! All of my images were there and needless to say I saved them to all 4 of my external hard drives immediately. So, this is something very positive about this group. I see arguments and disparaging comments occasionally in the posts and I simply skip over them and look for the positive things that I can learn from. Again, thanks everyone and GO CUBS !

Nonsense. The directories are deleted but the images are there, waiting for software to find them.

I format only when I need to. When I began the download, I get the message: download new. I can see the previously downloaded files so I've not made this mistake.... yet..... 😉
