When a camera gives me the choice, I prefer to have the gridlines displayed in the viewfinder, if only to get vertical lines right. I also like to have shooting info displayed, rather than having a blank view. Any opinions?

I use the grid lines too. It helps me hold the camera straight.

i too am with you. i find with the grid lines you follow the rule of thirds automaticaly at a subconcious level.

Back in my younger years (day-before-yesterday) I used to use the "E" grid screen in my Nikons, but later switched to the "B" screen, plain groundglass. I like to really study my image in the camera before shooting, and find the grids or exposure info very distracting.
There!...I said it!

I do the same thing, the grid lines also help on composition and the information in the viewfinder lets me use the sub-command and command wheels without having to remove my eye from the viewfinder.

Same here Jerry. I like to see the settings. I am one of those folks that go out and shoot and forget to check the settings the next day.

I totally agree, mine are always turned on so I can keep the camera parallel to the horizontal or verticle surface

Both the D3 and the D300 give me grid lines in live view but they disapear when I enlarge the view - but the red focus box is there

I'm a bit of a fanatic when it comes to straight horizontal lines. Then my vision went slanty (detached retina) and now I have to use the grid lines. I also keep almost all the info up on my screen, too. Doesn't seem to affect my composition at all. After a while I just ignore it unless I need it.

Yes I agree with all that. The grid makes the rule of thirds easier when composing the picture and the details of settings etc are helpful when displayed. Sometimes I have "burst" selected from the last time so it reminds me to turn it off for this this shot etc.

I've got the Nikon D90, can't find grid for Live View and no red box either. Guess not there.
