After you have visited the Viera Wetlands, about a mile away (to the East, just East of the I-95 Wickham Rd Exit 191) is this small zoo which is really very nice. It has a very large collection of Florida and Central American mammals and birds, a few from South America, and a small African exhibit with rhinos and giraffes.
This was the first weekend in about five months where the weather was not oppressively hot. The animal enclosures are in a wooded area so you can get a lot of nice dappled light. These were taken with a Canon 6D using an "old version" Canon 100-400L Series I lens.
If you are unable to get a photo of your favorite regional bird at the wetlands or Merritt Island, try here! Not as exciting - but you can see them all up close!
Crested Cara cara
King Vulture
Resting roseatte spoonbill
Jaguar
Hyacinth Macaw
Good set Steve, some beautiful creatures there,
Geoff

Wonderful set. Isn't it nice when you can get superb photos without trudging through the "outback?"

Thanks - and welcome to the forum. There were a number of posts recently about the pros and cons of the Canon 6D - it does not have all the bells and whistles of many of the newer cameras (for example, not as many focusing points, it does not have a built-in flash, etc.) but it is a very functional full-frame camera that some of us can afford. Some don't like it, other reviewers have claimed it is the "second-best full-frame camera out there". I just purchased this refurbished 6D a month ago from Canon, and all I can say is that I am extremely pleased with the results I am getting! It has superb low-light capability, and so photos like these in partial shade are absolutely no problem at all, even hand-held with a telephoto!

I ALMOST feel guilty... ! Thanks. I think I will go back soon and just camp out by the jaguar and do nothing but take photos of him when he finally decides to turn in my direction. Such a beautiful creature!
Very nice shots Steve. The Jaguar is a very classy looking cat!
