One more thing, You can't use the Nikon Teleconverters, They don't fit. Tamron made special ones for this lens.

Thanks ira,but I will be using the tamron lense (if purchased )on my canon 70d dslr and will hold off on a teleconverter.yes, they have a 1.4x tele for canon cams. 600mm is enough for me .

I can't imagine how this new lens can be better than the original. I've used the original one on safari as well as shooting the Blue Angels for several years, and it focuses very well and is crisp and sharp.

I liked my older one too, but I'm getting more keepers with this one.

I had the older version and traded it in for the new G2. It seems to be sharper, AF works better. More features like the addition VC mode 3, better coating, better weather seal, able to lock all focal lengths, larger foot on tripod collar with two mounting screw holes and a built in arca mount. It focuses closer then the old one and also closer then the two sigma versions, about 7 feet. I haven't been using it long, but I have notice a big difference in my images. See the attached shots.
The Heron photo is not cropped, the other two are. All hand held with VC on. Also you can fine tune this lens with the Tap device, being that it is an SP lens.

Nice. But with no comparison basis very little can be gleaned from your subjective musings.

You'll have to wait till DXO or Ken Rockwell does their test.

Very nice shots Ira. They look very good. Good luck with it, and hope to see more shots with it.

Thanks so much, I'm still working, so the only time I have to shoot is on weekends. I'll post some more in the Photo Gallery in the future.

Id like to know how it compares to the sigma 150-600

I know the features appear to be better than the Sigma but I am interested in a reliable third party comparison between the Sigma contempory and the Tamron on image quality.

cons of new tamron g2 lens is that its diameter is 99mm and a cpl for this can run anywhere from 179$ to 349 for a premium one. B&W has a kaesemann cpl filter for 179$ and has good reviews. It has front threads to screw a hood on. But anyway I will be looking for more reviews by our uhher"s and online.

The filter size is 95mm, the same as the previous one. I use the same filter that I used on the older version.
I also found an interesting video on youtube about the lens.
