I think all sports fans will get a kick out of this letter written to the Chicago Tribune....

No matter which side you are on in the matter of renaming the Washington Redskins, this is funny. Here is an e-mail sent to Clarence Page of the Chicago Tribune after an article he published concerning a name change for the Washington Redskins.

Dear Mr. Page:

I agree with our Native American population. I am highly insulted by the racially charged name of the Washington Redskins. One might argue that to name a professional football team after Native Americans would exalt them as fine warriors, but nay, nay. We must be careful not to offend, and in the spirit of political correctness and courtesy, we must move forward.

Let's ditch the Kansas City Chiefs, the Atlanta Braves and the Cleveland Indians. If your shorts are in a wad because of the reference the name Redskins makes to skin color, then we need to get rid of the Cleveland Browns. The Carolina Panthers obviously were named to keep the memory of militant Blacks from the 60s alive. It's offensive to us white folk.

The New York Yankees offend the Southern population. Do you see a team named for the Confederacy? No! There is no room for any reference to that tragic war that cost this country so many young men's lives.

I am also offended by the blatant references to the Catholic religion among our sports team names. It is totally inappropriate to have the New Orleans Saints, the Los Angeles Angels or the San Diego Padres.

Then there are the team names that glorify criminals who raped and pillaged. We are talking about the horrible Oakland Raiders, the Minnesota Vikings, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the Pittsburgh Pirates!

Now, let us address those teams that clearly send the wrong message to our children. The San Diego Chargers promote irresponsible fighting or even spending habits. This is a wrong message to our children.

The New York Giants and the San Francisco Giants promote obesity, a growing childhood epidemic. This is a wrong message to our children.

The Cincinnati Reds promote downers/barbiturates. This is a wrong message to our children.

The Milwaukee Brewers, well that goes without saying. This is a wrong message to our children.

So, there you go. We need to support any legislation that comes out to rectify this travesty, because the government will likely become involved with this issue, as they should. Just the kind of thing the do-nothing Congress loves.

As a diehard Oregon State fan, my wife and I, with all of this in mind, suggest it might also make some sense to change the name of the Oregon State women's athletic teams to something other than "the Beavers." (Especially when they play Southern California. Do we really want the Trojans sticking it to the Beavers???)

I always love your articles and I generally agree with them. As for the Redskins name, I would suggest they change the name to the "Foreskins" to better represent their community, paying tribute to the dickheads in Congress.

I always thought that the Cincinnati Reds referred to communism, glorifying it. I never did get that one. You would have thought they would change their names back in the McCarthy ere of commie witch hunts.

Let's just do away with names entirely and give them all numbers. Oh wait, number one and number two might not work. Oh, well.

name them with the zip code of their stadium.

Oh, 90+% of native americans don't care or actually approve of team names that refer to them.

Here in So Cal we have at least one High School next to a reservation where the teams not only have a tribal derived name but the tribal council and a group of shaman did a ceremony to dedicate the new school, stadium and teams. They show up at games on a regular basis do ceremonies for victory for the teams.

Guess what kind of team names predominate at schools on Indian Reservations???

You just don't understand, you ignorant conservatives, your all knowing liberal government an its moral authority knows what's best for you! What you are calling political correctness is just a subliminal message from your undeveloped brain, so just back off and leave the thinking to them!

The NFL has turned into a garbage League . OK to protest last year concerning the cop shootings , now we have men sitting down during the National Anthem , but when the Dallas Cowboys wanted to put a decal on their helmets to honor 5 slain Dallas PD officers , the NFL told them Nooooooo , you can't do that , it's to controversial ! Political correctness showcases how far we have fallen as a society . Rules and regulations on expression and speech . And the NFL is following the Leftist rule book , hook , line and sinker .

Actually they did. Although never legally changed the Cincinnati baseball team was known as the "Redlegs" in the 1950s. This confused me as a kid.

Didn't some of those "colored" teams have "stockings" in the name originally? I don't think that would go over too well today.

I dislike political correctness as much as any one, but redskin refers to the scalp taken from a dead Indian.

Our local school went through a name change controversy about thirty years ago, but kept the name "Indians." A year ago, it started up again. "Onteora Indians" apparently seemed offensive, so some board members voted to change it to some animal - not sure what. Their terms have expired, so the people who voted to change the name are gone. It's going to cost tax payers quite a bit to make all the changes. There are hundreds of music and sports uniforms that will have to be changed, in addition to the logos on the stationery, paintings around the school, etc.

There seems to be a movement to eliminate Native Americans from modern society. There was nothing offensive about the way Indians were portrayed at the school, but now the name and the tradition is gone. "Onteora" is supposedly an Indian term meaning "mountains in the sky." That name is used quite a bit locally, including State Route 28, "Onteora Trail," and The State Lake Onteora park. I wonder if they will stop teaching about Indians in the classroom.

They did. They were the Redlegs for a time during the Cold War. Everyone hated the change.
