What attracted me to this shot was the backlighting on the subject.It really brought out the colors in the wings.

Looks like a skipper to me, but I am no expert. In any case, it is a wonderful photo.

While a skipper is a butterfly, I don't think that's a skipper. I suspect it's some variety of fritillary.

All skippers are butterflies, but this is not a skipper. This butterfly is a Variegated Fritillary (Euptoieta claudia): http://www.naba.org/chapters/nabanj/butterflies/variegated_fritillary.html
