received final diagnosis from my eye doctor this morning.
1)Age related nuclear cataracts in both eyes but not a problem yet.
2)Early stage macular degeneration, both eyes, causing loss of vision.
3)Need a new prescription. My glasses were 20/20 6 weeks ago but are 20/60 and 20/50 now.
Can be corrected to 20/30.
Real bummer of a morning.
Would like to hear from anyone who is going through similar losses and how they
are handling it.
As many seniors as we have here i am sure there are several of us in similar circumstances.
Been there, done that, got the t-shirt... My cataract surgery was in 2013 (L) and 2014 (R); it helped some.
Getting old is no picnic. Hang in there, buddy.
I have both problems as well. I was diagnosed with macular degeneration 5 years ago. Been taking A-Reds by Bausch and Lomb and so far have had only one correction to my glasses. Cataracts probably won't get to a point that they will have to be removed for another 5 to 10 years. I can still see just fine and still use my cameras with minimal problems. I'm 70 so that's my excuse.

Cataracts are easy to correct, not a problem (I had both eyes done last year). Now the other problem added to cataracts, I seriously have no idea what the result can be.
Needing that much correction after 6 weeks is scary to say the least as getting new prescription will correct the symptom but not the problem so, if I were you I would nix the new glasses until the eyes are stabilized.
Just remember, this is internet and we can only relate to what we have experienced so do not read too much into what we say.
On a positive note, at least my cameras and most lenses are auto focus so
even if i can't see my subjects at least they will be in focus.

Cataracts, glaucoma, retinitis pigmentosa, detached retina.
There are worse things in life.
I had a torn retina a few months ago (one in 10,000 will get it) a quick operation to stick it back on and I am 95% vision in my one good eye but there again I am 72 soon and if it doesnt get any worse then I am OK with it
I had cataract surgery about 15 years ago: simple, painless process and corrected my vision but I still wear glasses. I'd recommend the operation now before your vision gets worse

Good luck! I'm still working to refine my refractive lens excanges (both eyes) that I had done last FEB. I go in for more lasix on FRI. This is not fun or cheap but what the heck, I'm in the last quarter and I sure as hell don't want to give it to my kids/grandkids if I can see/read/photograph as I continue to circle the drain. chase
I had both Cats removed this year...also have glaucoma and MD in one eye, for which i have an injection in the Sclera every six weeks for the past 7 years. Dont need specs except for reading. ( I am in my 80s)
What i'm reading here is that there can be many productive years between 'impaired' and 'blind'.
I stopped shooting film years ago. part of the reason was eyesight. I had retina surgery and a very large hole repaired. Golf went away because of depth perception.
2010or so I was gifted a camera and started the digital climb. Lots changed. I shoot with my left eye and am right handed. Developed some other physical limitations. But have captured some great images and am having fun.
Good luck to you.

I had cataract surgery on both eyes about seven years ago, and now have macular degeneration in left eye and detached vitreous in right eye. I will see my ophthalmologist in a get weeks for an update. When my sight is gone, I will choose a way to go.

Best wishes. I don't have that problem yet, but my father and grandfather had glaucoma. I
see it in my future.
Genetics make difference. I know I have some things coming my way. One has landed and I will need to deal with it before too long.
Best wishes, and very, very good luck.

Absolutely. There are several people on UHH that consider me to be impaired, but I don't think that is age related!
Stay confident and active. It's what makes my 89 year old mother-in-law my favorite party animal and a close friend.
Best wishes, you contribute a lot, and we expect you to keep doing so.
