I FEEL THE SAME ABOUT PEBBLE MINE.
I dedicated one page in my new book asking people to say NO TO PEBBLE MINE.
Thank goodness that was exposed well enough to stop it! What a boondoggle it would have been.
The coastal plain of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge is another one. That remains a hot potato in Alaska, particularly in Juneau (the legislature) and here on the North Slope. In fact it is really a moot issue though, because no oil company has expressed so much as a hint of interest in the past twenty years or so now. For good reason too: There ain't no oil in ANWR!
Had ten days in Alaska in late August-early September. First a day by air from Anchorage to Lake Clark was fabulous: lots of bears and a beautiful place. Then train, fabulous, to the Denali entrance, a wonderful drive to back country and then return by air taxi. Last part of the trip was a tour bus to Seward, a day on the Kenai Fjord and return to Anchorage by train. Weather superb and everything beautiful. With more time you can see a lot more. Can't wait to return! Chilimac
Why not trying what I do when I am in a new area. Go to a cab stand and ask a driver to show you the area and specify you want to see some of the things not on the commercial tours. That you are a photographer hobbyist. I have never been disappointed.

This might work in other places around the world but Alaska is so very different. I would not want to have to pay that bill.
