I think what is there is something that could be described more as "intense"rather than really angry. However, part of my style is that I tend to take portraits that are deliberately confrontational, with the subject looking directly at YOU, rather than just you looking at him or her. That is part of what I am trying to say, to raise the question about why would he possibly be confrontational/direct/intense/angry. That's what lies behind many of my photos.

Methinks you and your Buddy are over stressed. You need to get out of"meatgrinder" City and see the beauty in the rest of America. Try UTAH, Montana, New Mexico, and Colorado. ALYN

I've seen a great deal of the wilderness of the United States, including Alaska, been to the South Pacific more than 50 times, Indonesia about 5 times, used to live in a village in Samoa, speak Samoan, worked in Yellowstone National Park, camped out in Yosemite, and generally have one of the most stress-free personalities around. I learned long ago that one should not ever worry about things you have no control over, and just deal with the rest as it comes along.

My sense of Lawrence is that he is fairly stress-free, too.

What you are seeing is not stress or the effects of stress. What you are seeing is a wide, general meaning which is very conscious on my part when I photograph most people, and which emerges when you look at a large number of my photos (except for flower photos).

That these project some element of stress simply shows to me that I have in part succeeded in saying what I am trying to say, even if that meaning does not leap out obviously from each individual picture. When you view the assemblage -- let's say 100 of these photos together-- the collective meaning becomes much more clear.

I also know that if you are not American, you won't "get" that meaning because you will not have had the necessary cultural experience. And I also know that some of my photos affect people most strongly if they are African-American or have shared the African-American experience. I shall try to search through my files and locate one or two some people have reacted to like a slap in the face (of recognition).

The shots were taken with a Canon EOS7D (or is it D7, I always get it mixed up). The settings were different for each photo. We had some strange interior shots where the light was very bad and I had to increase the ISO to over 1,000. Results were grainy and moody.

And here is something that is going to sound very strange, and perhaps like false modesty, which it is not. Most of the time I really don't know technically what I am doing. Probably 90% of the people in this forum know a lot more technically about taking photos than I do. The only things I think I have going for me are strong senses of color and composition. The composition I probably learned from a year of art school, and also thousands and thousands of failed photos where the composition was terrible and I had a mentor who kept showing me the mistakes I made. After thousands of terrible photos I began to learn.
