To those of you who have a love affair with steam power UP 844 is highballing eastbound to Memphis, Tennessee. It left Cheyenne, Wy. yesterday. Here is the schedule from the UP.

Hopefully since this is information on a photo op it will stay in main photography discussion

No, it's not the 4014(Big Boy). It's a 4-8-4 Northern type. It was the last steam locomotive built for the UP by Alcoa, OOOPS; make that Alco: and first operated in December of 1944. It is the only steam locomotive in the United States that was never retired. That means it has been in service for 72 years. The expected date of restoration for 4014 is around 2020. I am hoping to be in Cheyenne the day 4014 comes out of the steam shop for it's maiden run after rebuild. The scuttlebutt going round is that after the 4014 is restored they are going to rebuild 3985. Lord I hope I am still alive to see that. There is just something about a 2 cylinders of 25" X 32" developing enough horse to move a 1,000 ton train at 100mph that amazes me.

Jethro, was the 3985 ever officially retired? Every UP roster I've ever seen carried it along with the 844. I have heard that the 4014 may run an excursion schedule from Cheyenne to Omaha. My only question is whether the tracks are heavy enough for the locomotive, tender and an effective excursion consist. I should say that is my only question other than whether UP is going to continue to pick up the tab for the cost overruns.

According to Union Pacific 3985 was last used in daily service in 1957, retired in 1962 & stored in the roundhouse in Cheyenne till 1975 when they put it on display near the Cheyenne depot. Some of the old timers volunteered to restore it in 1981. UP brass gave the project their blessing and it was put back into service in 1981.

This locomotive along with 844 & 4014 are the 3 steam locomotives in UP's Heritage Fleet. According to some UP Maintenance people I know, the mainline track from Los Angeles to Chicago is more than heavy enough to run 4014. I have seen 844 up close & personal in November of 2011 as she was here in Tucson to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Arizona's statehood. I also got to watch her at speed west of town going toward Phoenix.
