My father in law was a fireman for a steam engine when he was quite young,prior to diesel. He would have loved this image and then kept us up for hours with his stories. We were uncertain of what the red piece on the front of the engine is. My husband thought perhaps a safety devise.
Excellent photography! Your positioning is perfect, got the curve of the track, the billowing steam keeping the background subdued. Perfect.

A really wonderfully nostalgic and powerful image from my youth...spent steam from the cylinders and billows of coal smoke from the firebox that were keeping James Watt's concept moving the world in the early 1940s.

An image like this "does my heart good!"

Thank you carlysue, the red painted buffer beam was to make the engine more visible to workers on the tracks.

I always like shots of steam engines. Ones that are working and in action are even better. This is a very appealing shot. Well done.
