A great time visiting the Rushegura Mountain Silverback Gorilla family.
A tough trip getting in the mountain (and back) to track and locate the family...about 5-6 hours of trekking...but worth it.

Gorillas are probably my favorite animal. Must have been a great experience getting that close.

Love all 3. It is a shame the way humans have treated these gentle creatures, that just want to be left alone. It's a monstrous crime.
I hope you have more like these. I would love to see more of the countryside.
My wife and I were thinking about going there as part of Outreach Uganda program to help teach English to people in the outlying regions but I can't get enough time off of work to make it worth the trip and at the end of the day, it would have cost us over $5,000 per person. Not in the budget I'm afraid.
OH my they are magnificent!

I must say that I was impressed with Ugandan preservation efforts. The range of these magnificent beings is a mountain that over laps Rwanda, Uganda and Congo. The 1st two countries have active programs. The total population of Silverbacks was down to 600. It is believe that it now may be as high as 700-800.

Unfortunately it is a very expensive trip. The Country is very poor and in the mountains poverty looks most sever. The Churches are doing their best with help through dollars and volunteers.
See attached a few photos of children in the mountains. For the most part they are share croppers, working absentee land owners farms.
The last photo is of one of the porter resting at a stop...he carried all of my gear, 4+ bottles of water and lunch...for 6 hour for $20.00 plus tip. They were "lucky" to get that opportunity once a month.

Wonderful sets, both the gorillas and the people! What an experience!
