Shot this with a nikon 5100 with a 18-55 kit lens. I feel I needed alittle more light. Any thoughts?

I think that what you needed was to nail the focus. Nothing seems sharp and the part which looks more OOF is the center area of the flower itself. Its also underexposed.

What is the black bar under the flower????

Do post the original so that there is an access to a better capture. UHH JPG compression kills whatever you try to show and does allow for an informed answer.

As stated above.
Soft focus, lacks definition and is underexposed.
As Rongnongno mentioned, post original.

First you need to select (store original) and re-post!

What you needed in this shot is to move the "shadow protection" to the right, if you have one to open up the details in the shadows like so:

The picture, looking at the histogram, is underexposed. Easily fixed with an editor. The image, most probably due to the compression to make it a small JPEG has lost sharpness, also easy to fix.

How close were you to the flower? The Nikon 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 kit lens focuses down to 0.9 feet (11"). If closer than that, sharp focus would not be possible. Also, it would help to know what mode you were in and, if not in AUTO, what your settings were (aperture, shutter speed, ISO). This would help us on exposure and focus issues.

Use a flash or a reflector for more light.
