You have a copyright on your photo as soon as you take it.
If you're referring to the printed names people add to their photos, they're called watermarks. Search for that word in your image program's help files for specific instructions.

No, I mean Copyright Laws. The rights and ownership. Look up copyright laws of the US and how to claim copyrights.
My Canon 60D and my XTI puts a copyright notice 'in camera' to each picture I take but that won't stop others from claiming my pictures as their own.

place the cursor, Press alt + 0169, Ctrl + Alt + C
That should give you something that looks like this:

Additionally, you can save this as a brush in either Photoshop or Elements.
With this you can position the symbol wherever you want.
The general format is: symbol, year, photographer.

I have been looking for info on watermarks, your reply sounds easy, I am going to try it.... I have photoshop 5  if I up grade to Photoshop 10 do you know if my 5000 pictures will transfer to the new photoshop automatically?
Thanks for the info. I am using Corel Paintshop Pro. I see the tab to make a watermark, I just don't know how to get it on the photo so only my name is showing up and not the block around it.

if you are just doing individual photos, you can just use the text tool
You would use a raster layer at transparent (Opacity at zero), then you can add your text. I'm trying to find step by step directions for you.
There are you-tube videos out there if you get to it before I do....
