Yea right Ron, less trees=more birds. Guess what many of the deaths in Haiti are attributed to - mudslides caused by deforestation.
Well, did not have birds before, now we do. We did have squadrons of mosquitoes, now I have lone fighters.
What is going on in Haiti or the rest of the world is not of my concern. Land management is out of my reach. I manage mine correctly, thank you. Unlike most properties around I still have (many) trees*, not a desert of over watered grass. My use of a lawnmower? Limited to twice a month and less than an hour. A tank last me so long that I am surprised when it runs out of gas and have to think twice before thinking of it being the problem.
You can take your 'green attitude' put something over it and check what is in your eco footprint.
- If you put more than two curb bins of recyclable and trash a month, you have me beat.
- I carry the same plastic cup that was given to me last year for a drink of water and still use it for same purpose 'No lid, please'
- I bring my own ceramic cups (cafe/tea) everywhere I go.
- Napkins? If too many (especially when eating sea food) I take what is not used (most) and use it @ home.
- How about plastic bags? How many do you use per month? My total there is 0. We use the same $1.00 bags we purchased or had for free all the time.
- How many cans of beer/soda do you drink? My total is also 0. So...
- Since we are it, how much gas to you purchase per month? Between the three cars we have we use about 25 gallons**. Can you beat that?
- The home A/C is set at 83 in summer and 68 in winter. What are your settings?
- A/C in a car? rarely used (2 do not have it) and the third use 4/55 with success but in traffic jams (only time the A/C is on).
My everyday foot print is minimal, how is yours?
Flying is the biggest problem... I am in the process of checking commercial ships to go to Europe instead of flying. Both of us are retired so time is not an issue. Price could be an issue but considering that for 3k you are lodged, fed and carried to destination over 15 days (7+8 days) it really is not that much. When it comes to pollution, it is fraction to what I would use being in a plane simply because our combined weight (+- 300lbs) does not make a difference for the ship.
If you have me beat honestly, come back and give me lessons on recycling, composting, whatever.
Next time pick on someone who does not care.
Don't worry about the next paragraph, I am ranting against electric cars...
You use an electric car? Check the real cost. It is not because you lug it in into your home power grid that you are saving the environment. You only displace the pollution source. Add the low input/output rating of the batteries and.. Oops, you produce more crap than I do with two old cars and my newer who, incidentally allow me from point A to point B with an average of 36mpg. How about the battery pollution when they are manufactured and disposed off? It is not for nothing that the local power company offered $500.00 credit for electric car users...

* I own only one acre.
** Most is used when my wife delivers meals or go to Pensacola as a volunteer (once a week each). I take my car out only when I have three errant in three different places.
