Very interesting, without Von Braun, we might be speaking Russian.

Thanks for your feedback, William J. Renard. Actually, we eventually felt that Stalin wasn't interested in over-running all of Europe, much less in taking on the USA. The Russians outnumbered our Occupation forces by an estimated 10 to 1, so they easily could have taken us in 1946, especially since we immediately began downsizing in 1945. The combat GIs wanted to go home because the Germans were beaten. The Occupation army was made up of green kids like me. We were not issued weapons, at least not in the Army Air Force, and we had virtually no fighters or bombers left. It was a nervous time, but we didn't know anything about von Braun. Anyway, we knew (and the Russians knew) that we had atomic bombs, which were a far more imposing threat than Wernher von Braun.

I forgot to include a photo of the 19-year-old Maria Luise von Quistorp, who became Frau Wernher von Braun in 1947. Wernher's parents were adamant that he had to marry someone in the same aristocratic class. Wernher and his father inherited the German title of Freiherr (Baron) and, according to Wikipedia his mother, Emmy von Quistorp, was a decendant of Philip III of France, Valdemar I of Denmark, Robert III of Scotland, and Edward III of England. Maria was Wernher's maternal first cousin. He had to have special permission to fly back to Occupied Germany for the wedding and to enable her to emigrate to the U.S. at a time when no immigration quota existed for Germans.
