Has anyone used Corel's new Paint Shop Pro X9. I have PSP X7 Ultimate and I am considering upgrading to PSP X9. I am wondering if there is a worthwhile difference in X9 vs. X7. I know that Adobe Lightroom & Photoshop are far more popular, but I don't want to commit to the recurring monthly or annual fee that Adobe charges. I'd also like to hear you guy's opinions regarding the capabilities of Corel's programs vs. Adobe's programs.

I've used both PSP X9 and the Adobe Cloud PS CC 2015.5. They're both capable processing tools, and since they accept most of the same plugins, I'm good with either. I'm keeping PSP in the backgraound just in case Adobe ever decides to jack up the price of LR and PS CC. By then On1 Raw will be out, and there will be little need to to use LR.

Bob, I recall your passionate posts regarding On1. At that time I made a decision to go with DxO OpticsPro instead.
LR 5.7x is my main editing tool and I have become more adept with that (practice, practice, practice). DxO seems to be 40% editing workbench and 60% presets and overlays. The presets part works like the Nik Collection, but I find myself turning to Nik more often than DxO. I supplement occasionally with Topaz B&W and Texture Effects and have considered buying other Topaz tools. How do you feel now about choosing On1? It sounds as though you feel On1, esp. with the addition of Raw file handling, is or will be a truly competitive alternative to LR. Your thoughts?

Paint Shop Pro X9 is an excellent program and like Bob I keep it up to date just in case and I also use it occasionally for specific things. Lightroom and Photo shop CC really don't cost to much more if you are going to purchase the yearly updates for Paint Shop Pro.

Zoner Photo Studio X was just released as a subscription for $7.99 a month. ZPS is a good processing program with non-destructive RAW editing. It might be worth looking at ZPS. There is 30 day free trial of ZPS.

For those who may not be aware, Zoner works with Windows 7, 8 and 10, but is not compatible with Mac computers.

I have used Paint Shop Pro for many years, long before Corel took it over. I currently have Pro X8 and am very pleased. It does more than I know how to do. I only update the program about every three years because anything sooner does not seem to offer much improvement. I have found that X8 works better on 64-bit Windows 10 than does my older X6; but then X8 is really slow and so I need to add more RAM (I currently have 6 GB of DDR3 and I plan to double that soon). I hope this helps your thinking. OkBob

Corel also has AfterShot Pro, a capable replacement for Lightroom.

The IT guy at work (some time ago: I'm retired 19+ years) said to wait at least for two upgrades before buying again. So x7 to x9 may be a good step. I, too, have been using PSP from before the Canadians grabbed it. And I still like the flexibility of WordPerfect over the Word straitjacket. Blessings on Corel -- sort of.

Took a look at Zoner Photo Studio and liked how it handled my raw files ... and as you say, the "develop" module is non-destructive.

But the "edit" module is destructive and that's what turned me away.

Download the trial version of 9 and see if it offers what you need.

I upgraded to PSP X9 a couple of months ago. I'm not sure it is worth the money to upgrade as I haven't seen anything spectacular. It does offer a gradient tool which is kinda neat, although I'm not sure I'll have that much use for it. I have also found it to be rather "buggy," and have had a few exchanges with tech support. They have been able to help me each time, but I've never had problems with X8 or X7.

Thanks for everyone's input. I'm going to upgrade to X9 for one primary reason, X7 is not compatible with NIK Collection.

I agree with WordPerfect being far more flexible and easier to use than Word. IMO WordPerfect has always been the better word processing program.

Thank you. Well, at least two people agree on this. The Gates straitjacket, Micromush, has us all imprisoned -- except if we want to bite the Apple and get an even tighter straitjacket.
