The Auditorium

I took a ride with my wife and two film cameras to Ocean Grove New Jersey which is a Methodist controlled town on the Jersey Shore. This is a photo of the old auditorium that also serves as a church. I've taken many shots of this building. This one makes me think what this town must have been like in the past. I know that I like the building and the photo; but I'm wondering if it is like a shot of the grand kids. Wonderful for the family; but not so much necessarily for anyone else. You thoughts are all appreciated.

Well, I like it!
Photography is like any expressive medium. Some will like it, others won't; tastes and interests vary in art, music and literature as well.
I've seen this structure and the surrounding village (I think there are only two other communities like it in the US, one on Martha's Vineyard and the other in Maine) and while they are not visible, I "see" the people who gathered there and the story begins...
Now, about my grandchildren...

I know there is a community like this one on Martha's Vineyard. (Oak Bluffs). I'm not aware of the one in Maine. Thank you for taking a look. I like the photo as well.

I generally see my grandkid shots as just people shots that happen to be my grandkids Erich so no problem here. I find that attaching genres and names to photos limit the brains ability to see the photograph, in fact I wish there was a way to view the image and see the title afterwards….it is a choice to do so and hold nothing against it. For me this image seems a touch flat but can’t explain why. Maybe lift the shadows, to help me feel the texture of that sidewalk. I understand your off angle capture but the foliage on the left side is too overpowering for me and takes away from the subject. There appears to be some distortion.

This was my least favorite of your Gallery series, Erich. For me, the foliage is too dominant in this composition. As a casual viewer, I want to see more interesting (closer) architectural details. And curiously, with a wider view I think I want people included, for a sense of community life rather than a sterile feeling of museum piece.

From "The Eye of the Beholder" School: I was out for a walk along this tree lined land and as I turned the corner I came upon this interesting structure. I think I'll take a closer look...

I think it's a nice example of architectural photography.

I found I was trying to lean to see around the shrubbery. There is the corner of a bench suggesting the view might be better from there. It looks like a very attractive building.

I have seen this building many time. It is pretty impressive. I think if you moved a little more to the right more of the building would be available for viewing. A yashica 124 now that is old school☺

Good point about the foliage. Might be a bit heavy handed. Thanks for taking a look. Much appreciated.

Agreed with the foliage. I have another shot of this building from yesterday; but I included this one to get people's opinions. I've done better. I'll blame it on unfamiliarity with the new camera. lol. Thanks for taking the time to comment. You know I always value what you have to say.

It is certainly an interesting structure. I'm sure I'll be back and give it another crack. Thanks for your comment.

Thank you. I do appreciate that. I do, however, think the comments about the foliage are valid. The left third of my photo does not really do anything to improve the composition.

Good point. There is just too much in the way of bushes there. Thanks.

Yes, and I got a pretty neat photo of a young man about ten minutes after I took this photo who came up to me and wanted to know all about "that cool camera". Because of the basically silent shutter and the waist level finder, I was able to take a photo of him while he was commenting on the camera. He had no idea that I took the photo.
