Canon 18-135 IS Lens focusing problem

Today, right in the middle of a Church Directory Portrait Shoot, my lens just started zooming in and out of focus....Has this ever happened to anyone else? Luckly I had a back up lens in my assistant's bag, so I switched to her 18-135 (same lens) and had no problem. I am soooo confused. But then I stay confused...When snow melts, where does the white go?

If could be that you were too close or more likely that there was too much to choose from to focus on. I had this happen recently when I was focusing on a flower in the middle of a bush. The lens could not decide to focus on the leaves, branches or flower. To correct it I changed my focus from partial to spot.

Regarding your question on snow. Do flashlights emit light or suck in darkness?

Well...it's definitely hunting focus. The question is...why?

Something changed from one shot to another. I wonder if the lens contacts need to be cleaned?

Also, you CAN go manual focus in this situation :)

the white goes back to heaven to be reused silly . I never had that happen on my 18 135 , but it is a kit lens and I dont use it that often.

Hi. My name is Rick. I’m the owner and lead technician at Discount Camera Repair and I'll be glad to help you with your question today.

The most likely cause for this is a failed focus sensor in the lens. This is a common problem in most all digital lenses and can be repaired fairly inexpensively. If I can be of any help, please contact me at 303-669-0945 or visit my website, http://www.discountcamerarepair.com and send me an email.
