I have a canon 7d.
Does anybody have suggestions for a good walk-around lens?
I do macro stock photos, sports photography and portraits.
If anyone can offer some advice for lenses that would be appreciated.
Some say 15-85mm, 18-135, 24-70 and 70-200.
For a novice this is quite confusing.
Thank you
Richard
tamron 28-300 , my brother has one and loves it .
Depending on how much you want to pay for your glass, I like the 18 to 85mm and 100-400mm lens for most situations

I've grown too old (or maybe smart??) to walk around with my Canon 100-400 f/4L anymore.
It draws too much attention (esp with the hood attached, and I won't shoot without the hood in most situations) and it is a pain in the neck after a few hours, literally. I've learned the hard way that Canon probably includes that tripod mount on this lens for a reason.
I would walk around with what you have and then see what shots you are missing. Some like to see the whole p;icture and a wide angle would be for them. I have tunnel vision so a tele is for me. If you get a do everthing lens it will be big and heavey. Just my thoughts. - Dave

My 2 walk around lenses are the 17-55 and the 28-300. And sometimes I put the 105 in the small bag to catch bugs and flowers.

18-135 is plenty for most situations and you can hand hold it and it does not weigh a ton.

The Canon L series 28-300mm F3.5-5.6 IS is the best all-purpose lens. It would cover everything you have in the high end of focal length and come reasonably close to matching your best best wide angle. Its drawbacks are that it is big and heavy, and also heavy on the budget.

The Canon 18-200mm at about $700 is a good all a round lens. The canon 24-105mm at a little over a $1000 is also an excellent choice. Stay with Canon glass if you can.
I vote for the 15-85 f3.5-5.6 IS, a good all around lens from wide angle to portrait that use most often on my T2i Rebel and the 60D, and it's reasonably priced.
As you can see, there is no shortage of opinions on lens. So here's more ... 8-)
I am a big Tamron SP lens fan. The ratings are nearly as good as the Canon L series, and the cost is less than half ... and budget was an issue for me. If I had all the money I ever needed, I probably would have bought Canon L, but I have never regretted buying the Tamron. My most favorite is the 70-200mm f/2.8 that I use for low light sports (outdoor rodeo where fast shutter and wide open aperture is needed throughout the entire range) and for headshot & portraits. I also bought a 200-500mm Tamron for wildlife, and then bought a walkaround Tamron 24-135mm f/3.5-5.6. I shoot a Rebel and wanted to buy lens that would travel upward if I finally move to a full-sensor camera, even though my next one will be a 7D.
It sounds like you also need low-light and fast shutter capability, and IF you are on a budget, take a serious look at Tamron SP series. If you have excess cash, buy Canon L.
Thank you for the comments.
Any thoughts on 18-270 tamron.
I read the reviews and it seems like a good all round lens for the price.
Not ready to go full frame yet.

I have this lens and I highly recommend it. It covers about anything I have found the need to shoot on a walk around.
