In my reseach of lene's I find there are so many guess what you would call "off brands"

Curious about the Rokinon. I have noticed some really good pricing, but how much quailty is sacrificed?

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Rokinon-14mm-Ultra-Wide-Angle-f-2-8-IF-ED-UMC-Lens-Nikon-SLR-Cameras-FE14M-N-/170699701768?_trksid=p4069.m7&_trkparms=algo%3DLVI%26itu%3DUCI%26otn%3D2%26po%3DLVI%26ps%3D63%26clkid%3D8533116195679949008#ht_2067wt_1270

My mind is so boggled with reading about lens...ennie, mennie, minnei, moe.

Thanks
Gary

I went into Amazon and read some of their reviews. You may wnat to try that also and see what you think. Good luck.

Hi BigGWells: Unfortunately so many bargin lenses aren't really bargins. Rokinon is not one I'm familiar with. Check the reviews on them, before you spend your money. Here is a great website on Canon lenses. Not knowing your camera brand may make a difference but it does also touch on other brands. The site is easy to follow and understand it designed for the beginner photographer, it covers lens quality and usage. http://photonotes.org/articles/beginner-faq/lenses.html Hope this helps.

Just as a general statement: Rokinon has not been considered among the better "off brands". Tamron and Sigma are highly regarded and, although the savings may not be as great, the satisfaction is.
Keep on looking, keep on asking...

Oh sorry forget to say what camera: Nikon D5100. I totally understand about quality and price...."The bitterness of poor quality remains long after the sweetness of low price is forgotten"...

Gary,
I have no personal experience with this lesser known brand, but B&H carries them and they have fairly good reviews that are worth reading. If there were major problems, an outfit like B&H tends to drop them from their line.
Check out user comments for the Rokinon 14mm from B&H at:

Hope this helps.

go to popphoto.com click on their buyers guide and look at lens reviews. if i rember rokinon lenses are manual focus and have positive lab tests and reviews. due to the boom in video equiped dslr's manual focus lenses are making a big comeback and are about the only film equipment that has gone up in value not counting leica, hassy etc.

Ken Rockwell (and others) had a good review of the Tokina 12-24mm so I bought it, and I'm not disappointed. Not every lens a company makes is a winner, so I always read multiple reviews. Since I don't make my living from photography, I don't need the absolute best ($$$), but if two lenses are priced similarly, and one is better, I know which one I'm going to get.

Boggle your mind some more.

Ken Rockwell and Photozone have good reviews. The latest crop of Rokinons have been getting great reviews ( 14mm, 35mm, 85mm, 24mm, made in Korea). These are manual focus with focus confirm and mostly F1.4's and they are all for full frame. Personally, I am salivating for the 24 F1.4 @ $700 !

Go with the lens that are recommended by the top photographers on this web site, and not end up regretting
buying the off brand lens.
