My after-market supplier, LD Products, has informed me that HP does this "update" periodically to certain printers (not all models). My OfficeJet Pro 6835 was so effected.
They have offered to replace my recently purchased ink cartridges, just as soon as they can re-program the chips that are built into the individual cartridges. In the meantime, I was forced to purchase new HP cartridges from my local Staples store.
LD Products suggested that I go into the menu program of my HP printer, and turn-off the automatic update switch. This does NOT effect operation of the printer, but does prevent HP from altering my\\the internal programing of my HP printer. I have done so.
This was a real good reason to not purchase HP equipment in the foreseeable future.
This happened to me a few years ago, at the first opportunity I purchased a Canon printer and have been happy ever since.
As I said on nicksr1125's post on this same subject today, when I replaced an HP printer a couple years ago the main criteria for a new one was anything but a Hewlett-Packard.
