Hey Gary
The best micro lenses are the longer mm ones. Lets you have a little more room to work. I have the Nikon 105 and love it. Very sharp and gives great colors. But pricey. What is your budget like? There are many after market companies that come real close in quality now.

Dear Gary,

Manual focus macro, second hand. How much of a hurry are you in with macro shots? And how much automation do you need? Try a 90/2.5 Vivitar Series 1 (I'm still using mine).

Cheers,

R.

A budget, right now tight. I have added a lot to my camera bag in the last few months. So probaly leaning more towards a prime lens.

I prefer to stay with a Nikon lens...but certainly open to suggestions.

Looks like you can pick up a 105 D 2.8 AF for around $400. They are very nice .

Hi again BigGWells: Nikon makes great lenses, may I suggest you try places like KEH, B&H, Adorama, or even Craigs List for a used lens. I purchased my used Canon 100 mm 2.8 usm macro through Craigs List locally for $375 from a fellow who had bought it refurbished from B&H a couple of years ago. It's been a great lens.

I bought a used 105 nikon micro auto focus 2.8 about 8 years ago and still it's one of the best lenses in the pack!

I have the Nikon 40mm micro which is not as pricey and like it but would opt for the 105 myself.

Nikon 105mm macro for me. I have heard that the Sigma 150mm is a good lens but I am more than pleased with mine. I am not in a position to be able to use a tripod so the VR option is invaluable

After much online reading, I got a Nikon Micro 105mm on ebay. Fantastic lens! It is heavy, though. You can use it for regular photography, and it also does nice macro.

Just a quick hand held shot in my yard.

I use the 105mm Micro-Nikkor 2.8VR The best lens out there. Also I had the honor of meeting the "Intimidator" in Charlot, SC 1998. A great guy!

I think you would like around 100mm. Gives you more working space but still gets close enough.
