Places you have visited

On one of my visits to Ukraine I went to a place called Babi Yar. The entrance is next to a very busy highway maybe six lanes wide full of cars and trucks passing by.It was raining that day, and very gloomy. As I entered I noticed only about ten yards in I couldn't hear the traffic on the highway. Everything was very still. No birds, no noise, nothing but the light rain. I had a very uneasy feeling about this place. There were one or two monuments with flowers at their base but mostly just forest. As we entered the ravine there was a young boy kneeling in prayer in high grass soaking wet from the rain. His clothing was not from this time period. I had the feeling inside that something very bad happened here which it did. I had to leave this place, I will never go back.https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Holocaust_in_Ukraine

We visited Babi Yar a few years ago in the company of a Jewish couple with whom we were traveling. It was a very emotional experience, having previously visited the Holocaust Memorial in Israel. Not a pleasant experience in any sense, but very important for anyone having the opportunity to do so. I was struck by the fact that the darkest period in the history of the human race occurred during my lifetime and it's vital that it never be forgotten.
