I have a 18-55mm, a 50mm. Both take 58mm filters. I already have UV & CPL filters for these.
My 75-300mm takes 62mm UV filter which I have. Still need a CPL.
I just got the new 24-105L lens which takes 77mm. Need UV and CPL.
I would like a good quality filter (Hoya, B+W). Budget is always a consideration. I bought the "L" lens, and I'm not going to be so foolish as to throw a cheap filter on it. Are step-down rings going to save me money, or should I just by the filters?
I just ordered 3 UV filter lens for my Nikon D90. Went with the Marumi after seing several before and after pictures. I'm happy with them. Got the 52, 58 and 62. I've heard some will get the largest for their lens, like the 77 and then just hold it in front of the smaller ones to save money.

If you get the good filter in 77mm, get step down rings for the other 2 sizes you have 62 and 58. That will let you use the better CP and an ND if you get one of those on all of your lenses. Keep the UV's if you want protection and sell the CP's you have for those.

Don't try to use the smaller filters on the larger size lens or you will get some serious vignetting. always get filters to fit largest screw size lens and get stepping rigns to make them fit the smaller ones
Buy a CPL for the 77mm lens, should not use a smaller filter or you will get vignetting. Get a STEP UP ring that will attach a 77mm filter to a 58mm lens and one for the 62mm lens
