1) Read manual.
2) Look up tutorials on line (including Youtube)
3) Understand light diffusion and get at least one diffuser. Gary Fong's Lightspheres are a very good example. There are many variants available. (see
www.GaryFong.com). Also check out the tutorial videos on his website for some really good tips and techniques!
4) Post a few shots for UHH members to critique.
5) Practice, practice, practice. There just isn't a substitute.

I found on craigs list a 55-300 vr dx, the sb-600 , and a wireless shutter remote for 300... All very good-mint. Not bad right ?

Thanks everyone for the tips
Wow I've been searching Craigslist.com fora speed light almost daily! I must have missed that day. Good for you.
Depending on the quality of the camera that you want to put the speed light on, and you can afford it, go with the better
quality, as the extra features are well worth it. i use the 580EXII
speedlight on my Canon Cameras, and even though the price is
in the $500.00 price range, there isn't much this speedlight can't
do. I also use a NEEWER RoHS Speedlight with this camera, but
it leaves a lot to be desired, and I only use it as a slave light. If
you can possibly afford it go with the quality speedlight, and you
won't regret it.

I've had some really good luck recently.. I found that searching "nikon" in the search page on the home screen yeilds btter results because sometimes people put their gear in "electronics" not the photo section..
Great advice! I'm heading to Craigslist right now!
