I think it's a flower

We dropped in on our son and his family in Burbank, CA, earlier this week. I saw a plant with lots of these flowers? in his neighbor's yard next to the sidewalk. It looked interesting so I fetched my camera and took some pix. This photo is one of the results. What it is, I know not. It certainly has lots of structure and colors so that is good enough for me.

I've never seen anything like it, but it sure is pretty and you captured it well, Chuck!

Perhaps a relative of bougainvillea? Flower(s) are small, central. Beautiful magenta bracts. Family Nyctaginaceae?
