A very realistic image. Been in his shoes myself - painful.

I curious about the tilt. Obviously you meant that to be there. I'm wondering if you think the tilt gives the photo more impact? I'm not trying to be snarky. I am interested in your motives. I'm just learning about street photography and welcome any insights I can get. I like the photo in Black and white and I do think that the image portrays the pain of losing one's job. Thanks.

The tilt, to me, implies his life is about to slide off the edge. Very powerful, tells part of the story.

Tilt helps to lead you into the photo; also, creates a more dynamic image. Great shot, great exposure, as well!!

Unfortunately a lot of folks have the same pain. Those trillion dollar 'shovel ready' jobs never materialized.

To: Kmgw9v, ebrunner, rgrenaderphoto and dadaist.

Thank you for your nice comments.

I wish I could say that I’m an artist and planned the composition and especially the tilt, but the fact is, as soon as I saw the guy I immediately liked the scene and pushed the button.

A good shot. I like the shades of grey, and the way you caught him against the light background.

This is a nice image that tells its story well. I think, though, that I'd like it better if it were straightened.

It is indeed a nice image.

It does not tell a story. There is no indication at all that the gentleman pictured has lost a job. None. That is the bias in your own imagination.

Which actually brings up a "fault" with the image, though I'm not suggesting anyone get carried away with that as a description. It is a fault with photography, in that it is very hard to be less than ambiguous most of the time.

When we put together a paragraph full of letters to form words to form sentences to form paragraphs to be part of a complete article, our purpose is to convey information to the reader without excessive confusion and ambiguity. Photography is also a means of communications, but it is very very difficult to get a message across that is not ambiguous to at least some degree. People do have very vivid imaginations, and while for some it might be fun to just fire off triggers for the imagination of others, there are side effects. One side effect is that you can never tell what different people will think the picture is! Some like it because it is X, others hate it because it is Y.

But if you are good at writing there is less ambiguity in a paragraph, and if you are good at photography the same is true. Being "good" means the ability to manipulate the symbols used, whether letters in text or visual symbols in a picture. If the picture evokes the same emotions in the vast majority of the people who look at it, it has a chance to be iconic. If it evokes a vast mix of ambiguous emotions then the majority response will not be cohesive and an image is much less likely to gain acclaim for greatness.

It's a nice picture! If it were mine I would be very embarrassed to post it here and have anyone claim that picture tells a story of that man being unemployed. For all I know he is, but that picture has nothing to do with his employment status.

The look on his face tells me that he's had a hard day and being on the phone he's trying to correct the situation. That's what I see based on the title.

It's based on the title! Not the image...
