I am planning on re-introducing myself to photography after losing all of my cameras/equipment in a canoe accident about 30 yrs. ago. I am not a very "serious" photographer, but just interested in creating a record of family, friends, places, etc,. I am considering the purchase of a Nikon Coolpix L 840/B 500, or the Canon equivalent. I would welcome advice, comparisons, etc. Thank you. 😃 Oh! I am also interested in a camera with a viewfinder, in addition to the "screen" viewer. Any suggestions?
Welcome to UHH. You will enjoy the site, lots of nice people. Can't help you with your equipment, I'm green as grass but plenty of people will be able to help.
Welcome to UHH. I am a Nikon guy, so I would suggest Nikon. I am sure my Canon friends will suggest their brand.

The electronics viewfinder is a must. The LCD screen is totally useless in a strong daylight. One of a very few cameras with an electronic viewfinder is Panasonic ZS 40. Beside of the viewfinder feature it is a very powerful camera with all kind of features and with Leica Lens.

Welcome, and let me suggest going to the following site which under the cameras tab lets you specify features you want and also allows side-by-side comparison.
https://www.dpreview.com.
Welcome to the forum. I would highly recommend a camera with a viewfinder. If you have the opportunity to go to a camera store, then I would suggest you go and handle some cameras. Find one that ergonomically fits your hands. That the controls are in the right places for you etc.

Welcome. The best Nikon point and shoot with a view finder, I believe, is the Nikon P 900. The equivalent camera from Canon with a viewfinder would be the Canon SX60. I have shot both and you can't beat the image quality from the Nikon camera. Good luck.
Welcome aboard. Look forward to seeing some of your photos.

Welcome, you might want to check out the Canon G series, rather capable small camera.
Welcome to the group. Don't worry about the brand check what the camera is capable of. I'm a Nikon shooter myself and have been for over 40 years. If you are looking at smaller camera the Nikon P900 is an excellent very versatile camera but with a smaller sensor but in a good price range.
