I just finished using the 5D Mark IV at a four day training event. On one of the days I used my Canon 1Dx so I could have a frame of reference.

I don't do any DSLR video and I rarely ever use Live View.

Having used the Canon 6D, 5D Mark III, and 1Dx quite a bit, I can clearly see where the 5D Mark IV has it's advantages. I used no flash during the four days. The 5D Mark IV was clearly the best of the lot. The AF rarely, if ever, missed. The details came right out of the shadows without a lot of noise. Some of the images had a strong backlight but not once did I get any blown highlights. Image detail was very good.

Thus far, I am very pleased with the performance of the 5D Mark IV. I hope to have some time soon to just take some personal shots that I can post here.

I was also immediately pleased with my 5D MK IV's low light shooting capability when compared to the 5D3 and the 7D2, (photos previously posted) its definitely the best Canon sensor yet.

You don't mention at all what types of photography you were doing!
The types of photography has a lot more to do with gauging how well a camera performs than the camera itself.
If you shot all static subjects, ANYTHING will perform well!!
It would be much more informative if you told us exactly what subjects you shot and what the conditions were.
When I shot fast moving sports in the rain, it's much different than an indoor birthday party!! LoL
Since you mention a 1Dx I'm led to believe it was very demanding shooting.
But thanks for those insights!

It was a Substance Abuse Intervention training. There were keynote type speakers and several activities that involved the particpants. A lot of action going on during the activities. Not so fast that it would require the fast FPS of the 1Dx. I have always preferred the 1Dx in low light situations compared to my 6D and 5D MK III. This was an indoor event and flash would not have been appropriate. I love the silent (quieter) shutter of the 5D MK IV. It is slightly quieter than even the same setting onthe 7D MK II. The 1Dx is very noticeable when used during the quieter times.

The 1Dx has it's place in my style of photography and the 5D MK IV complements it very well.

Impressive! Since the 5DIII is already a great low light performer, I'd love to see how the IV can be an improvement. Still, I think it will be many moons until I consider an upgrade......

Now, here is my question...if you could only have one camera would you choose the 1DxII or the 5DIV? From what I have read the low light performance and focus system on the 1DxII are perhaps even better than the 5DIV. Do you trade that for 20mp images or take the slightly cheaper and less performance and 30mp images? Of course I guess it also depends on your budget and what you are shooting too.

I just got my Mark 4 and did a little shooting with it. Can't make any comparisons with anything but the 70D, which is a good camera in it's own right, but the Mark 4 is light years ahead. As I am not a professional and do not sell many images or do many paid shoots, I'm sure I didn't need to do this upgrade, but with my pleasure with the limited results I have had so far I'm glad I did.

I shot mainly wildlife and BIF with a 5DMkIII and a 100-400 II with a 1.4TC (max 560mm equivalent). I've had the new 5D IV since it came out and was greatly pleased to find that the AF system is even better now and has full capabilities again at f8 with the 100-400/1.4TC combo.

So, you find the FPS sufficient for your BIF shooting?

I came very close to getting the 1Dx II but could not really see any real benefit for me and my style of photography. The 5D IV did and does seem to offer me some good benefits- greater detail for landscapes and from what I have been able to see- better dynamic range and high ISO performance.

Here is a photo taken at a dimly lit wedding reception last night. It is the JPEG straight out of the camera- ISO 12,800. Yes, there is some noise, which cleans up nicely from the raw in Lightroom.

Last month I took a trip to Glacier National Park, I only wish my 5D Mark IV was in my bag. I got the camera when I returned home, and have really not put it through its paces yet. Early some morning I'll take to the "French Quarter" for some street shots, and see how it works on that arena. I'll also add some time to shoot some birds, and animals at City Park. Today I have read about problems using Sigma lenses on the Mark IV. That is no bother to me, since I don't own any Sigma lenses. People should look at the Sigma website to get the full scoop on the compatibility issue with the Sigma lenses. I have spoken to the Tamron people, and it is suggested to send lenses that are in warranty to them to add the new specs for the Mark IV in the internal chip. The Tamron tech. did say he knew of no issues with Tamron lenses as they stand now. I do know Reikan Technology, the maker of "FoCal" has updated their lens micro adjustment software, to version 2.3, which includes the Canon 5D Mark IV. So, little by little the 5D Mark IVs technology is be absorbed by other support companies around the world.

I'll look forwards to seeing those. Early morning in the Quarter is a magical time....
