It took me 25 years but I'm finally shooting again.
I used to shoot film 25 years ago; I had a Nikon F3 with a modest collection (4-5) of lenses. I loved composing pictures and seeing how they came out, but there were two problems: 1> I like experimenting and film wasn't cheap; and 2> I don't have great eyesight and never really got along well with split-field focusing.
At first, I was waiting for DSLRs, then I was waiting for the price to come down. After 25 years of waiting for the right time, I decided to get back into photography. I didn't want to give up anything I had when I shot with my F3, so I tried a couple of cameras and choose a Nikon D7200 (with 18-140mm lens).
After my first day of shooting, I fell in love with the camera! Best yet, it turns out I haven't forgotten my (modest) photography skills. DSLR photography is everything I dreamed of back in my film days.
Now, I know how to shoot, how to play with the exposure triangle (Can you believe it? You can now SELECT your ISO without changing film?!!!! This is [expletive] amazing!), and I know how to frame a shot.
I feel like I'm in the dark figuring out what I want to do with the RAW files. Shooting JPEG isn't go to be enough, since I want the flexibility of "developing" certain shots (without any quality loss); but I'm not really sure where I'm going with all this.
What I want to do is learn, share, and develop my skills as a photographer; but mostly, I want to PLAY with that camera!!!
Thanks for letting me share, and I appreciate any recommendations on what to do next.
(Here's one of my favorite shots from my first day of shooting after the 25-year hiatus)
Welcome to the forum. that D7200 that you have is quite a camera, I have the older brother a 7100. I don't know much about shooting RAW but there is a ton of people on the forum who are very familiar with it. You are going to get lots of help and advise. Just sit back, pour yourself another cup of coffee. you are among friends.
Welcome again and welcome back to photography, you were gone too long.

I too am new to the raw format. I posted my first attempt yesterday.
I used Nikon Capture, available for free on the Nikon web site.
Until I learn more, I'll use it as a learning tool.
Welcome to the group and welcome back photo land.
Welcome, you will find many here who are willing to help and assist you in rediscovering many things you want to know and don't forget to look at the different sections on how to use the camera as well as tips to edit those Raw files.
My 7100 is set up to save RAW on card 1 and jpg on card two. I will worry about the waste of space when the 2 tb external starts getting full.
Again, welcome to the Hog. Have fun exploring.
Welcome to the UHH.
My first digital camera only put out TIFF, my first and second DSLR only shot in RAW so I was more or less used to working with those kinds of files. Now I use RAW only 99%+ of the time. The PP (post processing) can be a huge part of the fun. I used to experiment also. It did get expensive at times. Even with my own dark room and loading bulk 35 mm film. Digital is great, shoot, shoot and shoot some more. Then delete and try the things that worked again.
Welcome to the forum! Glad to have you here!
