after reading about shutter actuation on uhh, I decided to check it out and to my surprise and dismay I found out the shutter actuation on my D90 is over 140,000, 140 % expected shutter life. How will the camera let me know that it's time for a new shutter? what signs should I look for? Lately I have been noticing that the camera will refuse to take a shot and I have to turn it off and back on. Is that a sign that it's time for a new shutter? thank you very much for your help.

A shutter can fail in several ways. They don't always fail catastrophically but often times gradually or intermittently.
The most likely symptoms will be "err" code on display when its starting to go.
If you don't get any intermittent behavior, It will be a case of pressing the shutter button and nothing happens. I wish I did not know that!

I don't think your problem has anything to do with your shutter. You have other problems there I think. You will not know when the shutter stops working some times till you look at your screen on the back. I would save my pennies for a new camera at this point. I think the cost of repair would be to much for a camera with that many miles on it. Is it still in good shape? Might give Nikon a call and see what the cost is for a new shutter and a cleaning. And maybe a check up. when you send it in, they will give you a quote on fixing.

FWIW, the shutter replacement on my D3 was right at $350.00. Pretty reasonable, I think.
How do you find out how many shutter operations have taken place?

If you use Picasa 3 , you open a picture as if you were going to edit it . Down in the right hand corner there is a small blue circle , click it and it will give you all the pics info. Scroll down to near the end and it show you your shutter count.
Brilliant, thanks Blueduck.
Thank you everybody for your wonderful help! This camera is one of the best gifts I have recieved from my husband. I love it n take good care of it and the thought that it might be on its last days, worries me. I hope I don't sound a little nutty LOL! @ Barny you can check this site
http://www.camerashuttercount.com but thanks to Blueduck's great knowledge you can also find out in Picasa !
My Nikion D50 just gave up the ghost and it is probably the shutter, what happened is I took a picture and the shutter just stuck there. tried everything, in the panel it read "err". Just ordered a new Nikon D5100 to replace it. Old one had a lot of miles on it and besides it was only 6 megapixels. to me it was not worth the money to fix it because I had a feeling it would be in the hundred dollar range if not more
Tried the Picasa blue circle and it gave me everything except the shutter count, my camera is a alpha a200 would it make a difference?
Yoly C, I will miss my old D50, it also was a Christmas present from my husband. The 3 of us (me, husband, and the D50) spent many happy hours hiking in the mountains. We decided to take it up the mountains again and give it a proper burial up there.
