It looks like they will be holding the event again this year! There was some speculation that it might be canceled, but it looks like they sorted out their 100 million dollar insurance policy are are moving forward with this year's races. I can't wait.
Last year was utter chaos, and I'm fortunate to be here today. Some might think I'm crazy for wanting to go back, but there is nothing quite like it. I shot over 2000 photos before the event was canceled.
http://www.airrace.org/Great photo op for those into this kind of photography! Anyone else planning to go?
I should go. The pilot of Rare Bear is a friend of mine- also a retired United Pilot. Of course John is getting old too!

Very cool Cliff! The F8F-2 Bearcat is one of the fastest planes out there! Wow... what I would give to meet your friend. I had a pit pass on my last trip, but didn't see anyone around the plane.
Here's a shot I captured of your friend. Hard to tell, but do you recognize him (ha ha)? You really should consider going out this year. I've missed a few, but I've been going to the Air Races for a couple decades now. This is what got me into photography.

Yeah - that's John - I can tell by that little mole on his cheek. :-)
John is one of the finest aviators I have ever known. He and I were both FAA check airmen - He gave me some of my annual checks and I gave him some of his. He is just a class guy.
I plan on going again this year. I generally get a media pass which allows me to go out to the pylons. The event is a real must for anyone interested in aviation.
I haven't been in a few years, so I might try and get out this year.... Always a lot of fun...

Very nice! How do you get a media pass? Many many years ago---way before digital, my photographer friends and I would sneak out onto the course and get as close to the pylons as possible. What a rush when those planes raced by. Needless to say, we got escorted out more than once. We were lucky not to get arrested. Virtually impossible to do this today. Security is very tight.
I should start making plans to go- make it a real photo trip- do Lake Tahoe, Donner Pass, Truckee on the way there and Virgina City, Carson City, Monitor Pass, Hope Valley & Carson Pass on the way back. Nice 4 day trip.

My sister and her friends go every year. Kind of like a reunion thing they do. Last year she left a half hour early due to other engagements. She and her friends were no more than 50 ft. from the impact site. No one in her group was hurt, thank God. I've been to a few races, not sure if I can make it this year, work gets in the way.

I'm fortunate that my daughter owns a film production company and she shoots sporting events, airshows, golf matches, etc. and I shoot stills for the events she is shooting. It is thru her company that I get the media pass. I'd go to the air races even if I didn't get the pass but I'd definately spring for the pit pass.
I will be there. Going down for the entire week. I also have not been in a couple of years. I get to work in the outer pylon 4 area. Great venue for getting some awesome shots.
Looks as if a number of us are going to be there this year. It would be good if we could perhaps meet up as a group, choke down a few brews, and take a few pics together. If anyone's interested, perhaps we could work on it as time gets closer to the event.
